Week 10: Bears @ 49ers (Thurs, 7:20 PM NFLN, WPWR)

Alex Smith is a wretched quarterback, but I have no doubt in my mind our defense will make him look like the QB the 49ers thought they were getting with the first pick in the draft.

Right. Yesterday Buck kept talking about how great it was for AZ that they were able to get the running game going and protect their QB. I'll bet even the Cardinals realized doing that against the Bears was nothing to get excited about.

Alex Smith is fine just as long as the defense prepares for the other guy. Maybe the 9ers should just claim they are starting Hill every week, then bring Smith in for the 2nd quarter on.

There were several shots on TV of Cards players laughing on the sidelines, with incredulous looks on their faces.

Now, I don't know what they were really laughing about. But it seems like we can make a pretty good guess. Teams like Cincy and Zona have to be in disbelief at just how easy it was to completely blow up the Bears. I mean, the Bears used to at least put forth a respectable effort if nothing else. Now they can't even say that. I'd be giddy with laughter too. It's like playing against empty jerseys, laid down on the field. There's just nothing there.

Lol @ the Browns for only scoring six points against empty jerseys.

"Yes, I felt like I hurt my team," Harris said, per the Chicago Tribune.

Harris said he was embarrassed at the thought of what people who saw him punch Lutui must think of him.

"I just want to apologize to my fans, first off [and] the little kids out there that saw that action, that I behaved in that manner," Harris said. "I apologize to my teammates. ... I'll make up for it."

Harris said he apologized to Lutui personally as well. He also said he apologized to Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald, a close friend of Harris's.

Im tired of hearing Tommy talk. Shutting up and doing something productive on the field would be a start. Doesn't matter because Im fairly certain Harris is gone after this season.

If Anderson could complete a simple screen pass that doesn't fall 3 yards short, they would have. The Browns seem to be willing to trip over empty jerseys.

Since Harris was probably more productive in a game he was kicked out of than a typical game in which he plays, maybe his punishment should be to convert him into an offensive guard. He doesn't do enough on defense to warrant keeping the position, so let him try to protect Cutler. No one else is willing to do it.

This is a 7-9 or 8-8 football team right now. That said, I don't think the 49ers are that much better, but they'll probably win a close one just because they're at home. Looks like they have a slight advantage over us everywhere except for QB and special teams. Alex Smith is a wretched quarterback, but I have no doubt in my mind our defense will make him look like the QB the 49ers thought they were getting with the first pick in the draft.

Might want to update your knowledge on Smith some. He's by no means a good QB but he isn't complete crap either. His shoulder is finally healthy and he is no longer indecisive. His QB rating is almost identical to Cutler's (not that QB rating is that valuable).

Tirico says Pittsburgh is full of "somewhat anonymous, high-impact defensive linemen."

We on the other hand are full of all too well-known, highly disappointing defensive linemen.

You cannot be serious. Comparing Smith's 2009 QB rating to Cutler's? Smith has thrown a whole 99 passes this year. If you want to compare QB ratings, lets compare Cutler's 86.4 career rating to Smith's 65.7. Injuries cannot be used as an excuse either. This is football, everyone has aches and pains. I understand you defending players on your favorite team, but you should try to be realistic and non-biased.

Wasn't saying he is as good as Cutler. I'm just pointing out that while he was really bad he has showed that he is no longer that awful QB.

Oh and you sure as hell can talk about injuries when its a QB who had to have surguries on his throwing shoulder. He was stupid, as was the coaches to allow it, and tried to play through the injury when it was actually serious. It cost him for years and it has finally this offseason gotten back to full strength. On top of that his sitting has allowed him to adjust to the NFL finally.

This time last year he almost retired. Partially due to his shoulder and partially because his best friend committed suicide and he was lost in grief because the friend tried to call him just before he did it and Smith didn't answer.

Comparing his rating to Cutler seems to imply a comparison of some sort, one that at this point is extremely lopsided. I suppose Smith doesn't look as bad as he used to, but its going to take a lot more than three games to erase three years of awful play. Don't worry, I'm sure he'll have around 300 yards and 3 TDs on Thursday with this defense he is facing.

So how do you all feel about Orton's recent struggles? I, for one, hope he stabilizes and continues to be a good option for Denver.

In Kyle's defense, those were two pretty darn good defenses he went up against these past couple weeks. Although I do note: late in the game, both the Bears and the Broncos needed their QBs to engineer a TD drive to win against the Steelers D. Cutler was able to, and Kyle wasn't.

i'd say mixed, for me. i don't have anything against Orton and i wish him the best, but there is definitely a part of me that feels...glad (maybe not the right word) to see him struggle a little. partially because i'm bitter about the Bears and partly because i don't want to hear people prop up Orton as some sort of mythical "winner" who just wins no matter what while Cutler gets the whole "he's not a winner" rap. if the Bears had Orton instead of Cutler at QB this year they'd probably have two wins.

Sums up my thoughts exactly.

NBC decided not to flex out of Eagles-Bears in week 11, so that game will still be on Sunday night as was originally tentatively scheduled.

I hope he tanks that way the trade looks better for us.

The public tide is just starting to regress for Orton, but what I really wanted to talk about is how [expletive] dumb people are that say that the Bears start to the season is because Orton was a winner and Cutler is not. These same people haven't watched a game all season and assume that the reason the Bears are doing poorly is because Cutler is a stats first QB who kills the team with his interceptions. The thing that pisses me off is these people obviously haven't watched a single second of Bears football this season. Yes the GB game was very public and yes Cutler probably lost that game with his arm, but the other 3 losses have had absolutely nothing to do with Cutler. When your defense is giving up a touchdown literally every single possession, it's going to be hard to be a winner. If you can explain to me how that's Cutler's fault, then maybe I'll give you the time of day but you can't.

It's actually a rant that applies to NFL fans and "experts" in general. The NFL is such a complex rapidly changing league. There are so many parts moving in unison, that there is no way that casual fans have any idea what's really going on. If Cutler led a mediocre team in Denver, got traded to Chicago and is leading a mediocre Chicago team, then Cutler is the problem because Chicago has an awesome defense, right? The Bears defense has been mediocre for 3 seasons now and up until 2-3 weeks ago, I hear people on TV and casual fans of other teams still saying things like "If Cutler can find a couple receivers he can trust...with that defense they will be great".

My point is, if you don't know what your talking about, don't talk because you sound stupid.

Most sports network analysis shows and whatnot would be gone if you stopped people from talking who don't know what they're talking about.

Although I'll admit that I've done my share of cheering against Kyle Orton this year, nothing that happens can change my view that trading for Cutler was absolutely the right move for the Bears. Orton pretty much had me convinced he was the Bears' franchise QB last year after his hot start, until he crushed my hopes in the second half of the season. He just doesn't have much zip on his throws, and although he is fairly accurate, his ceiling can only go so high with his subpar arm. He is basically a poor man's Chad Pennington. Bears are probably 2-6 if Orton is QB this year, especially considering how much worse the o-line is.
