so they climbed 8 spots (14th to 6th) in hitting and Hendry claims there was not significant improvement?

I wondered the same thing. i thought Joshua did a pretty solid job, given the excrement he was given to work with.

Dumb move. I don't get this.

You can bring in a new guy who can do just as good. I think the team will be better next year which will make the new hitting coach look good. But Hendry has to blame someone in the media. He has to make it look like he is doing something to better the team because they were such a disappointment.

Stupid move after an equally stupid move earlier in the year.

My guess is they make another stupid move and promote Sandberg.

Why don't you like him?

Disagreement in (admittedly perceived) philosophy. From what I have been able to glean, Sandberg preaches a more aggressive style.

Was Sandberg aggressive when he played or did he wait for his pitch?

Not great, not horrible. He drew walks in 8.2% of his plate appearances.

now they'll promote Sandberg or something stupid.

Hendry sure loves firing good hitting coaches

For all of us that pretty much only know Sandberg as a player, please explain to us what Sandberg's coaching philosophy is in regard to hitting and why it would be so negative for the 2010 team? Specifically outline the negative effects that he has had on his teams in the minors that he has coached.

I've followed the minors but not close enough to determine how bad or good of a hitting coach Sandberg would be. Listening to Colvin, Sandberg was an extremely positive influence in regard to hitting. Just interested to get your input, maybe it would change my mind in thinking that Sandberg wouldn't be a bad choice.

My feelings are partially based on rumblings that I've heard that Sandberg preaches a more aggressive approach at the plate. They're also partially based on the incredible failure rate of HOF players as coaches. I'll also admit it isn't entirely fair to Ryne to hold that against him as he isn't the past coaches that have failed.

If the organization really does have Sandberg targeted as the next manager, then I'd much prefer they give him a trial run as hitting coach at the major league level rather than just throwing him into the fire in 2011. Either he will do a good job and solidify himself as a managerial candidate, or he won't and the Cubs can decide to look elsewhere.

I remember Ryno always taking the first pitch. . . ALWAYS. . . .. and as much as I idolized the guy, it always bugged me that he took EVERY first pitch.

I hate to see a guy like Joshua get the ax, but if they are insistent that Ryno manage the club, it's not a bad idea for him to get his feet wet right here. . . .see how he interacts with major leaguers. . . . for an entire year.

The problem I have with it is that I strongly believe the Cubs have the talent to win next year. Putting a coach into a critical position to "see how he does" seems to be taking an awful risk to me. The Cubs would never embarrass Sandberg by firing him mid-season, either. So if you're going to put him in that position, you'd better be certain he's ready for it.

He wrote a series of columns for Yahoo that heavily advocated sacrifice bunting, hits and runs, and ripped on a variety of statistics. I don't know how that will affect his skills as a hitting instructor, but I'm guessing this team is going to work on a whole lotta bunting next season if he's the hitting coach.

I [expletive] hate this stupid [expletive] organization. No wonder we haven't won in 102 [expletive] years. We're run by a bunch of [expletive] idiots.

Would the hitting coach be able to override the philosophy of the manager? Lou seems to preach patience to a significant degree (especially considering he hired Perry), so would he condone Ryno coming in and promoting a highly aggressive style?

For the record, I wanted to keep Perry and I wish we would have kept Joshua as well.
