Figured we would start to see if MMA is big here as well, because my brother and I not only do podcast here on North Side Baseball. We also have our own live sports show on Ustream.tv in which we cover it all; however we are starting to get more into the MMA world landing big names and upcoming fighters.

Resume:

- Erin Toughill

- Frank Shamrock

- KJ Knoons

- Ryan Couture

- Neil Melanson

- Jason David Frank

This week is Tuesday we will have Neil Melanson Head Jiu Jitsu Coach for Xtreme Couture (Randy Couture's gym) and then next week we will air Ryan Couture's interview.

So, with the ok from Chuck Bryan...anything MMA lets just make this a big great thread for MMA talk.

Thanks Chuck.

i like watching the fights, we order all the big pay per views and everything, but I generally find MMA fans completely loathsome.

I happened to stop at a BWW during one of the last PPVs, and it was just obnoxious.

I've noticed a couple of different variations of the fans. Some of which are complete douches. Its pretty much the same guys who 5+ years ago would wear the camo wristbands and bandana's with a matching wifebeater as a fashion statement.

Who is Chuck Bryan?

Chuck Bryan is cbbryan here at nsbb. I've been working with him to get the NSBB Radio portion of the site launched.

I take it you don't head to the front page very often. :)

MMA I guess is still a touchy subject in the sports world still. Because MMA is becoming really big and it's not what it was in the '90's. This has jumped over boxing now and is headed for bigger and better things. So far out of all the fighters that my brother and I have had a pleasure to interview have similar back stories that a lot of people can relate to.

What's good about MMA is that it's Mix Martial Arts, taking all backgrounds/ styles. Is it barbaric like some people say sure, but people watch Boxing right? People watch Wrestling (WWE, yes I know people are going to say its fake and all that) but still...MMA is not that far different than any of those.

This is such a tired story. No one in MMA's target demographic that would be inclined to watch a combat sport still thinks MMA is human cockfighting. Any guy, 18-35 who does, will never like the sport regardless of what kind of evangelism you do for the sport. They just aren't fight fans. Any fight fan who says that is just being a head in the sand traditionalist loyal to boxing which is understandable. They like it better, fair enough.

The fact is, like you said, MMA is a huge sport. The reason I have my doubts that it will ever be like Dana White likes to proclaim, the biggest sport in the world, is the culture surrounding it. It's an almost perfect correlation to NASCAR. Some people don't care about cars and some people don't like fighting. Beyond that aesthetic preference, like IMB mentioned, a ton of people are turned off by the fan culture. I like auto racing but hate NASCAR because of the redneck fans, redneck drivers, redneck sponsors and redneck traditions. I like MMA a lot, but I can easily see how that would be true for MMA. I hate the super aggro dudes with tribal armband tattoos and TAPOUT window stickers on their SUV's. I hate terrible nu metal blasting from sound systems. I hate people who wear Affliction and Ed Hardy or have douchey facial hair and wear tight jeans with odd embroidery on them.

I like the sport for what it is. It's really compelling, often inspiring and definitely appeals to the primal nature of testing yourself against someone else with no distractions or advantages beyond what you're gifted with athletically, tactically, mentally and what you gain through hard work. That's the cool part.

I have a 20+ year background in martial arts and I've never given MMA a chance due to how it is marketed.

I get exactly where your coming from or at least I would like to hope I do. MMA isn't for everyone and I get that, because I have some friends that think the same why oh "UFC is human cockfighting" It makes sense. Some like it and some don't I think it's like 40/60 in favor of my group actually not liking it. Some fans I can't stand, but that comes with any sport.

I like MMA and boxing. I don't think of it as human cockfighting and don't really get that analogy either. The fights themselves are good, the fighters for the most part are cool with the exception of a few like Tito Ortiz. I think the people who don't like MMA are the same ones who don't like boxing just out of the sheer violence factor. Again the approach and the marketing for MMA has become old though. Its less about the fighting now and more about the image and promotions heading down that WWF road (or whatever its called now). With that comes the percentage of douchy fans who make you want to be nowhere around them during the fight. The problem is though they come out of nowhere come the night of the fight and you cant avoid them at any sports bar.

I know this is something you want really badly, so if you ask nicely enough I won't even charge you for it.

in fact, I may throw in a couple extras. just for you, buddy.

Hello and nice to meet you! :D

there is a gym in my town and i've thought about going, just because those guys are in such great shape. plus, getting punched in th eface is an experience everyone should have.

have you really never been punched in the face?

i've been punched the face, and i'll bet i've been in 1/4 the arguments over communism that you have

i'd pay to watch anderson silva fight, but i can't help but think he should be a middleweight boxer. that guy is just incredible.

you can't hit people with elbows in boxing, though.

For real though, you should watch him fight sometime if you get the chance. The last time I saw him, he just embarrassed every dumb bros favorite, forrest griffin. It was one of the best things I've ever seen, because every oakley-wearing idiot just loves forrest griffin and he's basically a [expletive].

and if he wasnt [expletive], he is after that beating.

I watched a little of this once when I was at Hooters and it was on. I found the girls bringing my wings far more interesting though.

And the place was filled with the douchebag fans that others have mentioned.

I like a good boxing match, but just haven't been able to get into this sport.

Wolf basically nailed it with his post. I can't name any more than about 5 MMA guys at the very moment, and even though I really enjoy watching the fights themselves, I'll never care enough to follow the careers of guys. I just want to see two guys beat the crap out of each other and it doesn't really matter what their name is.

I'd even go so far as to order the pay per view fights (which we already do), but I still don't need to know all of their names or their stats.

Silva is awesome. The current heavyweight champion (already forgot his name) is so good right now that the heavyweight division isn't worth the money spent on PPV until he retires. I refuse to support MMA any more than maybe ordering PPV fights 3 or 4 times a year with everyone chipping in to come over and watch it with me.

Here's how it works. Everyone comes over with their own 12 pack of beer. We play pool, cards, music, talk and when a fight is about to start, we stop what we are doing and watch the fight. We typically look over each guy and choose who we think will win and then cheer that guy (imagine a horse race where you bet on #6 to win, place or show) until the fight is over, and then we go back to our card game until the next fight starts.

Don't care about MMA fans or all the prefight ceremonies. We just like watching dudes shed blood and seeing who has the ugliest cauliflower ears.
