Broncos fans have to be kicking themselves. Their defense looks legit this year. Imagine if they had just managed to keep Cutler happy.

They don't seem to care right now...Orton has proven capable enough to run their offense it seems. I bet most would tell you they'd rather have Orton than Cutler. Cutler has been awesome the last 3 games, but he's had 3 game stretches of awesomeness in the past only to see a leveling off. I think Cutler is legit and what he shows is an improvement over last year, but the jury is still out a bit.

Not really. It will go down as one of the worst trades in NFL history.

No. After a five-second deliberation, the jury has unanimously determined that Jay Cutler is a badass.

The jury is not still out at all. Especially not within the context of comparing him to Orton.

Anyone who says that they would rather have Orton than Cutler is just a flat out football [expletive]. If anyone watched the Broncos game today, they would see good ol' Kyle missing targets and overthrowing the deep ball as he has done throughout his career. His touchdown pass today was completely because of Marshall. Half his yards throwing this year are after the catch it seems. Just look at the Stokely play from week 1. Anyway, Cutler is awesome and anyone with a gripe about him this year is just grasping at straws. 7 TD'S 1 INT and 2 4th quarter comebacks the last 3 weeks. Thanks, I'll take that any year.

Woah woah woah....I didn't mean to imply that Orton is even in the same stratosphere as Cutler. He's clearly not. I just think Broncos fans hate Cutler for the way he forced himself out of Denver, and Orton runs McDaniels system adequately. Orton is probably the model "game manager" for teams. A mediocre QB that plays conservative and doesn't make a ton of mistakes.

The thing I love to see about Cutler is that he's been doing a great job since the GB game of playing to the game situation. The last 3 games he's opened things up when he needs to, has gone for a lot of short passes and check downs when needed, and has thrown in a long ball for good measure to keep the defense honest. I think Cutler can definitely be in the Manning/Brady level of QB play, but he has to prove he is consistent. Manning and Brady have stinkers like Cutler had every once in awhile which is fine, but they don't have up and down seasons like he did last year.

The game manager label is just a euphemism for a guy that sucks but is your best option. Orton was pretty error prone in Chicago, anyway. I don't know why people thought he was secure with the football. He wasn't.

He's doing a good job of protecting the ball in Denver so far, though. Denver isn't going to allow less than 7 points per game all year though and people will realize Orton sucks soon enough.

I'm watching the WGN sports rap, and everyone is praising Lovie for putting Tillman on Johnson in the second half, but why was the bugger Tillman not on Johnson from the beginning?

Because if we tried on defense in the 1st half, the 2nd half would have been boring.

Are you familiar with the username CubsGM by any chance?

So Rex Grossman was a game manager? He wasn't, he was a wild gunslinger who at times looked really good but the rest of the time was horrible and made a ton of mistakes. He did change a bit towards the end of his tenure here, and worked on limiting his mistakes.

I honestly don't know if it was a coincidence or not, but Orton looked really really good to start last year and after his ankle injury looked like a completely different and awful QB. Check out his numbers broken down:

Pre-injury:

7 games

143 completions

230 attempts

62.2% completion percentage

1,669 yards

238 yards per game

10 TD

4 INT

91.4 QB rating

Post-injury

7 games

121 completions

221 attempts

54.8% completion percentage

1,195 yards

171 yards per game

8 TD

8 INT

67.2 QB rating

I think the injury, and trying to come back too early on it caused him to play more tentatively, took a bit off of his throws, and made him worse. Of course we'll get to see this season, since he's starting out another season well (his QB rating for the year is around 91 after today). Maybe he's just a guy that fades as the season goes along. No way is Orton among the top half of QBs in this league, but I think he's towards the top of the next 15. Then again, I've been a Kyle Orton supporter since the day the Bears drafted him.

"Game Manager" : NFL :: "Gritty" : MLB

I disagree with this. Being a game manager in the NFL is actually a good thing. Obviously you'd rather have a Peyton, Brady, etc. type QB, but a game manager in the NFL (i.e. a QB who may not make big plays, but doesn't make many mistakes) is a valuable thing.

Kerry Collins was a game manager for the Titans last year, for example.

Posted
Kerry Collins is basically the reason why no one in their right mind picked the Titans to win the Super Bowl.

And it wasn't Kerry Collins that kept the Titans from making the Super Bowl last year. With weapons around him he's fine, but there weren't enough weapons last year. This year, the entire team is awful.

We don't win 13 games last year with a more mistake prone QB, but I don't think there are a lot of QBs that would have taken us further. I think last year's team went about as far as the overall talent allowed.

Sure, I doubt Brady or Manning gets much more than 13-3 out of last years Titans but if you put one of those guys on the Titans last year and you're thinking that team is a heavy favorite to at least get to the Super Bowl. Game managers are great and all but you need a QB who can carry a team at some point in the playoffs.

On the right team a game manager can be part of a Super Bowl team (2000 Ravens w/Trent Dilfer, 1999 Titans w/McNair, 2005 Steelers w/Roethlisberger).

Again, it's definitely preferable to have a better QB than a game manager, but the "game manager" tag is not equivalent to the mythical "gritty" tag in MLB. There is a value in being a game manager (not as much as being a great QB, though) while there is not to being "gritty."

And by a QB taking the Titans further I didn't mean a better record than 13-3, I meant taking them further in the playoffs. Once CJ went down, there just weren't enough weapons for the Titans to win and short of Peyton, Brady, Brees or Rivers I'm not sure there's a QB who could have pulled that game out.

Yeah, if they kept Cutler happy, they would be better than 4-0.
