i thought he caught that with a knee on the ground

It's not college

If your knee hits the ground you're down, no?

You have to be touched when on the ground or go down because of an opponent, unlike in college.

Only down by contact in the pros, I'm pretty sure.

I know you have to be touched if you fall down, but for some reason I thought that a player catching it with his knee down marked the play down. Whatever.

Um, no.

OH YEAH! WIDE LEFT!

So what's the point of a QB taking a knee if it doesn't mark the player down?

I've always wondered about this. I'm guessing there are exceptions in the rule book that make taking a knee means you're down and spiking the ball not intentional grounding.

Because it's a special play (just like the holder isn't down when he receives the snap on a FG) where you're conceding and it protects the QB.

It's only been the rule for all of forever in the NFL that you need to be touched when you're down in the NFL. Not to be a dick but how have you not known that?

I think there is some sort of rule about, if no players go past the LOS, then a knee without contact = down. But I think that rule is in place specifically with kneel downs in mind to protect the QB. I think the logic is, if no one goes past the LOS, they aren't trying to advance the ball so it's down.
