Love this gamble. At the cost of nothing, why not take a look. At his peak, Diamond had a mid-90's fastball with a plus change. Spotty curve and slider, pitches that never developed pre-injury. Maybe he doesn't rebound. Not all guys rebound. But it's worth the look to see if a bit more time has healed that arm. If not, you walk away.

Diamond was a top prospect before Tommy John, they called the trio of Danks, Volquez, and Diamond "DVD". He always had terrible control, and it's been especially heinous since coming back from TJS. The K's came back though, so hopefully that means his stuff is still good and maybe a different organization and different coaches can help him with his control. Smart move to pick him up.

Danks turned out pretty good, and Volquez was doing great before you know who got to him, so hopefully theres hope for Diamond. Plus he sounds Jewish, and weve been without ever since Jason Marquis departure, unless you count Rothschild.

Fuld, Grabow and I believe Fox are Jewish.

I believe Fox is Jewish.

He went to a private, Catholic high school, so...

Speaking as someone who went to Catholic school, there's a noticeable number of non-Catholics who go to those schools. Sometimes, it's the best place to go for your education, or, in potentially in Fox's case, for the best sports.

Skimming through some Ranger fan sites, it seems that his stuff his slowly worked his way back. At the very least, he makes for an intriguing pen prospect. Still would like to see them give him a twirl as a starter, but either way, he makes a good addition to the upper levels of our system.

I'll have to head down to Des Moines and check him out.

That makes two of us.

Let me know when you're going and we'll meet up. I'm about an hour and 1/2 away.

Better get there by Monday...

I tried to get down there today, but I'm hindered by the "honey-do list." Have the Cubs said how they'll use him?

Since Iowas season has drawn to a close and as far as I can tell, Diamond hasnt pitched Id assume that they're saving him for next year. He'll join a list of Ryan Dempster, Wade Miller, Chad Fox, and Scott Williamson as post surgical pitchers theyve tried to revive. Dempster worked out, the other 3, not so much.

We'll plan some Iowa NSBBers get together for next year.

I checked Diamond's status on the ICubs site and he was listed as "reserve." I assumed that meant he wasn't going to be pitching.

Apparently Cubs assistant GM Randy Bush was Diamond's head coach in college.

Also, the Rangers had planned to send Diamond to the AFL so it'll be interesting to see where he goes (that he was earmarked for the AFL makes his release all the more surprising).

Completely unnecessary. They could have simply moved Chad Fox to the 60-day DL to open up a spot on the 40-man roster.

We may just be trying to get out of keeping him on the 40 next season.

Or maybe his arm is toast.
