The problem with the likes of Aaron Miles, Joey Gathright, and Paul Bako is they should have never been given big league contracts. One of the points of spring training is to see what your minor leaguers are capable of, and give them a chance to land those backup jobs. Miles, Gathright, and Bako should have been Blanco, Fuld, and Hill from the get go. If you get deep into spring training and find out that you dont have the right guys to fill out your 25 man roster then guys like Miles and Gathroght will be out there for cheap, or other teams willing to trade them. When Miles was first signed, I didnt mind him as an addition as a cheap utility man, but the 2 year 5 mil deal perplexed me.

This being said, as bad as Miles is, hes not the problem. Granted, he shouldnt be on the team, but a utility player has never been a make or break for any team. He should have been DFAd months ago, but he really cant accoutn for the failure of our big guys in the clutch.

I disagree in a way. Miles is the problem in that it shows our GM would rather throw away money on some garbage veteran as opposed to filling out our last parts of the roster with some young, league minimum kid from the system. Maybe had we done a bit more of that, we could have afforded to upgrade the offense this year at the deadline.

Thats the point. But that doesnt make Miles the problem. That makes Hendry the problem. Was Miles supposed to just say no to the free 5 million dollars? Hell no, but it should have been Andres Blanco from jump street. Had Blanco, Darwin Barney, or whoever proves in spring training that he couldnt do the job, then they could have gone out and gotten an Alex Cintron or Esteban German type for league minimum or less, and they couldnt possible have been worse than Miles, but no, Hendry jumped all over Miles like a house wife on the last Tickle Me Elmo at chrismas time.

Which is why I don't get how anyone can think Hendry deserves more time here. Sure the next guy could be worse, but it's reached the point where Jim needs to go.

He doesnt, but there are some who feel that he shouldnt be fired as a punishment if they dont have something better lined up. Im all for sending him packing, because this entire season has been inexcuseable, and the offseason is a huge part of that. All of his moves, it seems have been to help immediately with no thought of the futurre consequences. I was all for signing Soriano after the 2006 season, but I dont think there was a soul on earth who thought that 8 years was a good idea. There is a part of me that just wants him fired publically, but theres also a part that wants them to amke sure they have something better in the wings. If they really do have someone from the Red Sox regime in mind, by all means make it happen, but if its Coletti or something, hed be no better than Hendry.

Also, we should remember that Miles wasnt so much signed as a utility man, but as a platoon partner for FOntenot, and during spring training, it was looking like theyd be a pretty good platoon batting 7th or 8th before the wheels promptyl fell off of both. Hendry just has no patience and likes to get his guy as soon as possible and not wait for a bargain.

What a mess.

Might as well pile on, Bob. Everyone else is.

I hope they're all happy with a Fuld/Johnson platoon in CF next year and Fukudome in RF because that's where we're headed after Bradley gets traded for nothing and we're paying him to play elsewhere. That's okay, the little bit of money they shred trading Bradley will go toward a veteren catcher to take Soto's place. World Series, here we come.

Another reason why I would be trying to get someone from the Red Sox chain in here. No way anyone from an organization that treasures OBP. is going to let Milton go. But, if Hendry is still here that will happen. Just like after '04 when we had to get rid of both Moises and Sammy. Then we will repeat '05 next year. With '06 not too far away.

I'm absolutely convinced Bradley is gone at this point.

I have no problem with Brenly ripping when necessary, I just have a problem with Brenly being too much of a meathead to realize Bradley hasn't just been doing it for a month. Between Tim Sassone's idiotic statement that Bradley hasn't done anything since June and Brenly's nonsense about him only performing for one month there's just too many stupid comments out there about Bradley.

Bradley is a jerk. He treats people like crap and causes friction where there doesn't need to be any. He started out this season horrible. But overall he's been fine on the field, and in July and August he's been pretty close to excellent. He's been batting 2nd behind a fairly useless Theriot for much of that time and he's never been a big HR guy so the RBI totals can't be expected to be high.

Bradley brings on a lot of the criticism himself. He's not some innocent bystander. But the paid professionals who are handing out that criticism should really try paying attention.

Under normal circumstances I think you are right, but the wild card is Ricketts. There's no telling if he would squash any notion of paying Bradley to play somewhere else.

I really cant imagine them just flushing 20 million down the toilet with a new owner coming into power. That would not look good.

You can count the number of players who haven't been a major disappointment this year on one hand. There is plenty of blame to go around. Then again, most of the players aren't crying to the media about the fans being racist or umpires treating them unfairly.

For the record, I am not in favor of dumping Bradley this offseason.

I think if we're at the point where the teams color guy is now ripping him publicly than Bradley isn't going to react well and probably will do something stupid to force the issue, even if Ricketts would prefer to keep him around.

Can't imagine he's the kind of guy to just shake-off public criticism from Brenly. That's the risk they ran signing Bradley and it's going to blow up in their face.

It's no secret he's brought some of it on himself. But he hasn't done anything to the level people might have really feared coming in. He kept quite when he was playing terrible in April/May and constantly admitted publically (when he did speak publically) that he was playing poorly and needed to get better. No excuses. He worked hard to get better and has been great since June. Then when he continued to get booed in June/July/August/now September, he (perhaps stupidly) spouted-off about not being supported as much as he'd like. He was probably right, but it's admittedly stupid to say that publically when the team is tanking. I'm sure if Lee makes those comments in the same situation, nobody bats and eye.

Then some reporters bait him with some stupid race questions and he makes a harmless smart-alec reply which people insanely skew to claim he's playing the race card and calling Cub's fans racist.

Bradley had a rep coming in that was likely deserved and he probably needs to be even more humble/cliche'/modest/etc. than the next guy because of that rep. But he hasn't done a single thing this season to deserve the treatment he's gotten from fans, journalists, broadcasters and posters. It's simply amazing to me that people are buying this garbage. So you don't "like" the guy. Get over yourself. If I had to be bombarded with the crap Bradley gets on a daily basis in the middle of a disappointing season, I'd freaking snap. And so would most of the people who are trying to railroad him out of Chicago.

I don't want to split hairs, but this comment while not coming out and stating that Cubs fans are racist, I think his intent is pretty clear:

"America doesn't believe in racism. All I'm saying is I just pray the game is nine innings, so I can be out there the least amount of time as possible and go home." - Milton Bradley

Right. That was his response to a reporter asking him if the mistreatment he received (in his mind, anyway) was due to racism. I definitely don't see how this constitutes "crying to the media about fans being racist."

it definitely constitutes a pathetic reporter trying to get a guy with a bad reputation to get himself in trouble, though.

He cried to the media about hatred while being intentionally vague and the obvious question was does that mean race is involved. The media didn't bait him. He brought up the hatred idea. Up until that point he had a couple guys in the media, namely Kaplan and Stone, who ragged on him constantly, and a handful of fans giving him a hard time. Since that time it's been horrible. But he brought the whole thing up in the first place.

He's the scapegoat for this entire team crapping the bed. It's almost like a lot are booing him because he was Jim's big offseason target, like it's booing Jim.

Then we agree to disagree. That statement is a clear indictment of Cubs fans in a very racist tone to me.

Our team isnt good. The good thing about the 2008 team is that there were no easy outs on that team.

That lineup was a thing of beauty. Now you have Lee, Ramirez, and Fukudome and then find a way to stack the rest of the turds around them.

Milton Bradley is the hardest guy to get out on the team.
