I know it is Usain but running 9.58 is insane, .11 faster than Beijing, that is 12 meters a second. The U.S. record was broken with 9.71 Tyson Gay.

What will he do in the 200 18 sec.?

I honestly think 19.1 and change is not out of the question. He looked sharp out of the blocks and just opened up after his drive phase. 9.58 is just ridiculous though. Gay broke the American record and got beat pretty bad. I'm curious to see what Gay can do in the 200. He just PRed in the 100. He looks to be in incredible shape.

i think gay can take him in the 200, he's taken him in the past. but that was before bolt mysteriously got way faster in a way short time frame.

I hope he does. Bolt is too much of a showboat for my liking. I know he's just having fun. But there's a difference between having fun, and "excessive celebration". But yeah, I've had a weird feeling about the Jamaican sprinters since they stormed Beijing last year. They were always good, but the only one that anyone in the world really feared was Asafa Powell. But none of them have tested positive for anything, so I guess I have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

So Bolt broke the 100m record by more than anyone has since they started electronic timing, and in a situation where each record-break is more difficult than the last. This would be like if Bonds hit 90 homers to set the record

Gay's second half of the race was quicker than the first half so it looks like he and Bolt will be pushing each other. I would like to see a lne assignment 4 and 5 or even more fun 1 and 8 but that won't happen unless they draw and not go by time but that won't happen either

I've always wondered what the absolute pinnacle of human achievement was in an event like this. What's the absolute fastest time that the human body could run a race like this?

Now this is a guy that I really hope is clean. I don't think anyone would take track seriously anymore if Bolt came out and tested for some sort of PED.

People take track seriously? It's practice for real sports.

It's one of my favorite summer olympic sports.

Track is the second biggest sport in the world behind soccer. Just because America doesn't embrace it doesn't mean people don't follow it. It paid for my college education, so I still follow it when I can.

In terms of what? Participation?

Certainly not dollars. But it's definitely high in participation and in popularity in other countries. All these smaller countries (especially in Africa) that can't afford the proper equipment or training for other sports end up running since it doesn't require money to get you started. Granted, in many of those cases it may be due to a lack of options, but it's still huge. Just look at the Olympics. You go to watch most of the basketball games and there were empty seats in the arenas that hold what, 25,000 people? But the track stadium with a capacity of 91,000 was basically filled to the brim. It may not be second (I forgot where I found that article, so I can't site it right now), but it's definitely up there.

Look at the other options. Baseball isn't even an Olympic sport anymore. Basketball is big here and in Europe, but it gets most of it's attention here. Football is really only our thing. Cricket could probably beat it out. Up until a few years ago Cricket questions were on the forms to become a citizen of Australia. Hockey, mostly Canada.

I find this hard to believe. Maybe for the olympics, but I read not to long ago about how horrible things are for track and nobody is showing up to events. Sure, people participate, because if you run somewhere, jump or throw something you are essentially doing track. It's practice for actual sports.

Eh, I see it a different way. I see running, swimming, and wrestling to be the only real sports left. I consider the rest to be games. These are the only three sports that is just you and your body competing against other people and their bodies. No balls involved. No teammates to pass to when you're having a bad day. No learned skill like hitting a golfball. It's just natural ability and hard work. Just my opinion though. And it probably won't be a popular one on a baseball messageboard.

But I've had this disagreement with many people before and found that it leads nowhere since people feel very differently about the sport. My whole point was that just because it's not as big here as the big four, doesn't mean that no one cares about it.

And I also don't want to hijack the thread anymore. So back to Bolt. Anyone know when they're airing the 200 finals?

Not as big and not even in the same discussion with them, let alone all the other big sports.

But half of my point was that I find it hard to believe that finding out this guy was using something would turn people away, because A) people aren't really that into it to begin with, and B) track is littered with steroids and has been for decades and everybody knows it, so why would Bolt, who lots of people suspect cheats anyway, being caught really cause an issue?

Well when Michael Johnson broke the world record in the 200, there were people wondering the same thing. They thought he passed the threshold of what a human being should be able to do. They used to believe that your heart would fail at that speed. I don't think we'll ever see anyone go faster than 9.3 in the 100 or 19 seconds in the 200. But then again, they used to think the four minute mile was unattainable too.

I see your point. But do you think it'd be a big issue if Lance Armstrong was caught using something? Sure Armstrong has seven Tour de France wins. And Bolt is a huge athlete on the world stage right now with multiple Olympic gold medals, world records, and now a world championship with probably more to come, and he's only what, 21 years old?

A big issue is different from driving people away. Cycling is also littered with drug cheats, guys go down every year, there's a niche audience and they don't really care. Would people who take cycling seriously now really stop taking it seriously if Lance tested positive?

I think the same could be said for track. It has it's niche audience as well. The audience obviously swells around Olympic time (same with swimming). But as far as driving people away, I don't think it would do too much. It'd be big news for a few weeks if he got caught, but the people who are willing to watch guys run around an oval are probably going to keep doing it if more big names get caught.

It's a shame that we have to even ask the question of steroids in any sport, but unfortunately that's where we're at as a culture. If someone is head and shoulders better than everyone else at a sport, he or she is automatically under suspicion. I think the only one that is above suspicion is Tiger Woods.

If seemingly everyone wasn't getting caught or if they didn't have a huge cloud around their heads we wouldn't always be thinking they were cheating.

The cool thing to me about Bolt still is that he isn't giving it his all the entire race. He always loses his form at the end and lets up. If Gay can really keep pushing him, he's gonna go even faster.

Yes and in europe they are treated like gods, many American sprinters like coming home because they can focus on the training rather than being celebrities. Wierd huh
