[A New Era]

I like this guy. It's not just because he won today, but because of his good first year, and good #'s in the minors leading up to when we got him. I doubt we'll beable to sign Lilly after his contract is up so it's nice to have another lefty option for the rotation. A decent young one at that. Yes I know we've got Marshall. But I feel Gorzelanny has just a bit more potential than Marshall. Plus I'm a sucker for new Cubbies. :D)

As I said in the GT, tonight could well have been a mirage, but this is a guy who had a fairly solid 200 inning season in 2007. If Tom ends up being close to that pitcher again, Hendry made a damned good trade.

 

Of course being a flyball pitcher at PNC helped (and will hurt at Wrigley), but he's not bad for what amounts to a throw in.

I'm pretty encouraged by this, though. I think it's more likely Gorz can maintain success than a guy like Joel Pineiro.

I believe he's changed his delievery since his last significant amount of time in the majors, he was more 3/4s before...that's probably added a few MPH

Fantastic outing from Gorzy tonight. In other news, do you think we can petition MLB to triple the number of Reds' games for the 2010 season? I think it would be helpful.

Sometimes I wonder if the team a young pitchers on has an effect on his performance, more so than just the ball park. For instance take a guy like Gorzalanny or Johnny Cueto, and if they're ona team like the Reds or Pirates, they have more pressure on them considering they know the offense isnt going to give them much to work with. On the other hand, take the same pitcher and put him on a solid offense, and they know they can give up a run or 2, and the offense can back them up. On one hand, it can lower the anxiety level and they can relax a bit, but as long as thy dont get too relaxed out there, as some pitchers do when they get a big lead behind them early on.

 

Unfortunately for Gorz, I dont think theres much he can do to avoid Iowa once Ted Lilly comes back to take his rightful spot.

I would assume Gorz would go down. It will only be 11-16 days until September 1st and Gorz would be unavailable for the first 3-4 of those. It will probably depend on how the bullpen has been used the previous few days though and how much the Cubs need fresh arms.

 

Either way I don't think it's a bad situation because the timeframe will be so short before the Cubs will get everybody back from Iowa.
