Can the Cubs, as currently constructed, catch the Cardinals if Holliday continues his recent surge in the second half? My initial thought is that at this point we pretty much know what Theriot, Fontenot and Fukudome are going to bring to the table, so to answer the question "yes", it involves a lot of 'ifs' - if Bradley starts hitting, if Soto rebounds from a poor first half and injury, if Soriano starts hitting, if Ramirez rebounds from an injury, if Lee stays hot, etc. I don't know what help is out there, but that seems like a lot of 'ifs' to feel very confident about making the playoffs.

If the answer is "no", what possibilities exist for help?

You answered your own question. If our guys heat up, yes. If not, no.

Guess I'm just wondering if someone else sees something I don't. Wouldn't be the first time.

We need more production from Soriano and Bradley as well as Soto when he returns. Lee needs to keep up what hes doing. I really wish there was a way to get Fox in the lineup regularly, but that will be hard. Of course, the pitching needs to stat strong as well.

Soto had a .916 OPS in June and .841 OPS in July before getting hurt. Aramis has also slowly been improving since returning from his injury.

Even with Hill playing for two weeks now and Aramis still isn't producing like he can. Nonetheless, we've posted a 12-7 record in July and St. Louis has posted an 11-8 record. Acquiring Holliday will help them, but continued improvement from Aramis and a return to health by Soto should keep us right with them.

Then we could still acquire Freddy Sanchez or someone.

The Cubs can absolutely "catch" the Cardinals even if they have Holliday. On paper, without Holliday, the Cubs are the better team. With Holliday, I'd probably still give the edge to the Cubs on paper.

Fukudome>Schumaker

Theriot

Lee

Aramis=Holliday-a lot of X factors between these 2

Bradley

Soriano>DeRosa

Soto>Molina, and thats if Soto comes back healthy and productive

Fontenot/Baker=Ryan/Lugu, who cares, they all suck

The Cards really seem to have a bit of an edge here. Again, If Bradley, Soriano, and Soto are producing, they're well better than the Cards guys. If Ramirez was fully healthy, hed be better than non Coors Holliday, but we all see him grimacing after every swing, and while hes still great to have in the lineup, I dont see the power coming back this season.

Can the Cubs catch the Cardinals? Yes.

Will they? I'd say the odds are slightly against.

If you presume that the Cubs' hitters will likely have second halves in line with their recent full seasons, then you'd have to predict that the Cubs would pass them.

Now that DeRosa seems to be heating up, this race should be fun. :D

However, the Cards still need a # 5 starter.

Welcome to the board.

If both teams play up to their potential, this could be an incredible race. I'm having a hard time being optimistic about the rest of this year now knowing that we really can't make any moves.

Thanks, kind indeed.

Although I'm a Redbird fan, I still believe that the Cubs have to be dethroned. The Cubs are overdue for a hot streak, and then it's on.

Good luck, northsiders.

At least from my experiences, Red Birds fans have all been very civil and extremely knowledgeable about the game. Even my trips down to StL to watch a Cubs/Cards, I was always treated really well.

Good luck to the Cards going for the wildcard \:D/
