I know the Reds would charge us an in division premium, and I know hes a fairly large contract, but its not that bad of a deal.

This year, hes owed the remainder of 4.75 mil

2010-6.75 mil, which we can afford

hes owed 11 mil in 2011, but we should have some decent payroll cleared out by then, and in 2012, he owed 12 mil with a 1 mil club buyout option. I think thats pretty good deal considering a middle infielder who can hit and field is exactly what we need. Of course, we wont tell Lou that hes a righty.

No way they trade him, he's cheap, he's solid, he's under their control for the next few years at an affordable price, he's in his prime, and he's also one of the faces of that franchise now. No way they trade him when they don't have to, let alone to a division rival

Is there a chance the Cubs could get Phillips? Yes. But due to certain mitigating factors, I highly doubt it.

I don't think there's any chance at all, at least not this season, especially to a division rival. He's a bit of a bargain for them right now. His salary takes a big jump during the 2011 season, so I could see them maybe thinking about trading him next offseason if they're out of it.

No. There's no chance.

I've learned that is baseball there is no such thing as "no chance", "never", etc. If Mike Piazza can be dealt from the Marlins to the Mets, if Boston/NYY can make a trade with each other, or even SD/LAD make a trade, or Alex Rodriguez can be traded in the prime of his career, then anything's possible.

With that said, I seriously doubt the Cubs are interesting, so the point is moot.

What were the circumstances of Piazza's trade to New York? He got traded to Florida from LA, but Florida never really intended on keeping him, right?

Yes, but it goes to show there is no such thing as "not a chance", or "absolute won't happen." I don't really want Phillips, since he is kind of overrated. I was just trying to say to reds44 that he may feel "not a chance" of a Phillips to a Cubs trade, there is no way you can say 100% not a chance in sports.

what if the reds gave the cubs brandon phillips for free, but with the stipulation that the cubs also take on dusty baker as manager for as long as they keep brandon phillips? would you do it?

i sure as hell would not.

Okay, the chances are statistically insignificant. So much so that discussing the possibility is an absolute waste of time.

I hope so, cause otherwise we're gonna have a lot to look out for from the Reds in the coming years with all that young talent they have.

We've been hearing this for about the last 8 years now.

Screw the Reds, I'm concerned about this Rickie Weeks guy and his 30-30 potential

That Rickie Weeks guy you speak of will likely be in Milwaukee for 1 more year tops.
