Our 3B and best hitter is out probably another month, we have 3 healthy OFs, 2 with suspect defensive, one that's a headcase, and another that shouldn't start against LHP. Our infield is a mess and nobody besides Jake Fox is a threat at the plate and even he is 0 for his last 10 or so. If for no other reason, make a trade to counter the Cards getting DeRosa. This offense is nothing and I'm seriously starting to regret having tickets to these next 3 in Pittsburgh but I'm a Cubs fan so all the games will probably get rained out anyway.

I don't think ARam will be out for another month...probably 2-3 weeks. And we don't even know if we have the financial resources to make a trade bc of the sale. And if we do have limited resources, its pretty unlikely that we will give the go ahead to spend them given the way the Cubs have played. I think what you see is what you get. They are a team that is not one more away from competing for a championship.

because making a trade for the sake of appearing to do something always works so well

True, not making a trade at all sure is working

Odds are they don't have the money for an impact trade until the sale is complete.

Its going to take more than 1 player to fix this. If we could get a good bat and a solid reliever or 2, that would work, but at this point, I dont think a Mark Teahen or Felip Lopez is going to fix anything. Its a start, but Jims going to have to go all out. I dont know what the financial situation is exactly, but we need to do what we can. As much as the Cubs want to fall out of this division and start selling, the Brewers and Cardinals wont let them.

How much help would a Mark Teahen or someone like that be? That's likely all we can afford and we'd likely overpay in prospects for him.

If a good deal is there that we can do, we should go for it. Given Hendry's willingness to make trades in the past, though, I suspect either a good trade is not there or we can't add payroll.

He already made it clear that hes going to wait until Ramirez returns and adress the needs then. As much as we want a shiny new toy now, he might be right. Once Ramirez returns the need may very well shift from the offense to the bullpen. Felipe Lopez would be a nice platoon partner for Fontenot, but once Ramirez returns, Font is a #8 hitter, and you can do worse than Font at the 8 spot. The pen, on the other hand is an absolute disaster. I dont like it any more than anyone else, but waiting it out could be the thing to do, unelss we want to dump a bunch of prospects for Branyan and then in 2 or 3 weeks, hes a pinch hitter. If a trade was to be made before Ramirez' return, it would have been done about a month ago.

We are more than 1 player away from turning this [expletive] show around. The only type of trade I would approve of is if we started trading off assets like we were GM. Edited by Cubswin11

I'd have rather coutered the Cards getting DeRosa by getting DeRosa ourselves....

Numerous issues with that article. Here are a couple.

First, he wants to bench everybody who's not performing. So, we bench Soriano, Fontenot, Kosuke and Bradley and we play Hoff, Blanco, Miles and ?. I don't know how that latter group is any better than the former. With the possible exception of Hoff, it's likely worse.

Second, he cites Hendry making bad moves in the offseason and then opines that surely he can manage to maker more. More what? More bad trades? That's likely what you get if you rush into a deal or just make a move to make one. If the Cubs are maxed out on salary and can't add more then we're only making lateral moves at very best.

Nobody is running away with the division and we're not collapsing out of it. Desperation won't help the situation.

I personally wonder if Lou did not want Bradley but Hendry didnt listen to him and got rid of Derosa who lou loved and now he is taking his anger out on bradley.

Has anyone else heard the story that back in the Dusty era, they were considering Bradley(this part we know) but Dusty and Milton had a head to head meeting, and Milton rubbed Dusty the wrong way Dusty told Hendry no. I remember hearing about it on one of the Score shows, M&H or B&B.

I'd bet against it.

Our leadoff spot is a very serious issue right now, but I get the direction you are heading in and I largely agree.

My preference is to NOT make a trade... Don't want to sound overly defeatist, but JH would need to make multiple moves, IMHO, to sufficiently improve this team. Yes, I know (and agree w/ the premise that) we just need to get into the playoffs since it's a crapshoot... But I just don't like the idea of trading away pieces of the farm for marginal improvements. The only deals I'd want to see are of the selling type...IOW, the kinds of deals that won't happen since our large contracts are largely untradeable & b/c the Cubs will never sell... I know we live in the here & now, but I personally don't have a problem with looking to the near future either...

I'm with you. If we're still playing under .500 in 2 or 3 weeks, we need to start looking at moving pieces like Gregg, Harden, Lee (although I doubt we would do that as it's TOO much of a white flag) and maybe even guys like Johnson.

It's really kind of a bad situation for us, though...all the contracts we'd really benefit from moving (Soriano, Bradley, Fukudome, etc) are the ones we can't move without taking a huge loss. The guys that are somewhat effective for their price tag (Lee, Gregg, Harden) are the ones we could get value for.

we don't just need a second baseman we need a stud second baseman. Preferably a middle of the order guy. Know of any?

Dan Uggla would fit that but I don't see the Marlins becoming sellers anytime soon. Not that they would move him anyway. I still say we make one final push for Brian Roberts, even though he is not a middle of the order guy.
