Sorry if this has been mentioned somewhere else (I'm in New Zealand right now and can't read through everything), but Joe Simokaitis is now pitching for the Mesa Cubs. He must have been asked to convert to pitching but refused when he was released. He then realized that no one else figured he had much talent as an infielder, so he decided to make that change?!?!?!
Posted

Simokaitis was traded to the Mariners last year.

Don't know if he was released by the Mariners or was just a minor league free agent, but his only appearance in the minors this season is with Mesa.

Per Nathan Baliva, he had a tryout as a pitcher in Peoria and, evidently, was good enough.

Major lineup shakeups today for the Chiefs.

Brenly hits 3rd (1st time in career)

Vitters hits 7th (!)

Ridling hits 8th (!!)

Vitters needs as many at bats as possible so of course the Cubs will have him batting 7th.

Pretty sure the Cubs don't have anything to do with it, just our manager trying to find a way to get him going would be my guess. The Ridling one confuses me more since he is hitting .295 this month and leads the team in RBI.

The Cubs should be involved with it. He's the Cubs top prospect, he's slumping big deal, he needs to get as many at bats as possible. With him missing a good chunk of the last few years the last thing they need to do is bat him 7th where he will get less at bats.

Muschko got the start for Daytona.

Castro so far: 2/2, BB, R, 4 RBI, 2B, 3B

This guy almost has to be a lock for a top 100 right? He's young for his league, he has tremendous tools and his bat is performing already.

Vitters just hit #14 (or #15, depending on your perspective on the umps' screwup earlier in the season).

Archer: 5 hitless/scoreless, 4/5 K/BB so far.

16 in my book. Umps screwed him at home in April too on one that landed across the street fair. Archer is done. 88 pitches in 5 innings.

he doesn't have much power or patience and his defense (while they like his tools) is inconsistent. i liked him a lot coming into this year and am very happy with how he's performed, but i don't know that he's a lock for top 100.

He made the Futures Game so Baseball America must like him some. But, yeah would like to see him take a few more walks.

I'm sure he's on the cusp of BA's top 100. They'll love what he's done.

i do have some concern that he follows the ronny cedeno career path - middle infielder with fairly good pop and defensive tools, but careless mistakes and no plate discipline. but i'll say that castro is a year younger at A+ and doesn't have the contact issues that ronny had for much of his minor league career.

and 10 minutes before the game starts, Pevey switches Vitters and Brenly.

What are the odds that somebody in the Cubs front office made a call to that manager today before the game? I'd say 90%...

Should we be happy that Guyer's seemingly turned it around back in Daytona, or is it just because he's a 23 year old who moved back down to a the level he was at last year that he's getting hot? His numbers at AA make him a non-prospect, but his numbers in A+ make him look like a top 5 guy in our system.

He was at Peoria last year.

Yep. I'd think about putting Guyer in the Top 10 if he keeps up this level of production at Daytona, but small sample sizes and all that.

My mistake on that. Guess I didn't realize he had skipped A+. It made sense, age wise, that he'd be in AA this year, so I didn't make the connection.

Well in that case, I'd say it helps his case a lot. Still, as a 23 year old in A+ ball, he needs to be hitting like this to be taken seriously.
