I was listening to the Score this morning, and they were talking about Reed having back soreness and they didnt know how serious it was. It has been his main issue throughout his career. I was wondering why they didnt have the lefty killer in yesterday vs. not only a lefty, but a bad lefty. I figured they were hoping that Kosuke would build on his Saturday game.

So if Reed needs to be DLd, Im assuming that Freel takes his place, ot the only other options are Taguchi and Fuld. Again, too bad about Brad Snyder.

Well... the left-handed part of our platoon actually hits left-handed pitching better... so it might not be the end of the world to let Fukudome play full time. I still hate to see Reed on the DL, though... he's one of my favorite Cubs.

Fuku is essentially a full timer, but they bring in Reed not so much because Fukus bad vs. lefties but because Reeds so good vs. lefties. Id assume that if Reed does need DL time, Freel would just be brought back up,or else Taguchi would be called on because hes the only righty of the Iowa bunch, aside from Dubois, who would basically be like having another Fox or Hoff patrolling the outfield.

Huh? Fuku does not hit left handed pitching better than Reed.

Fuku OPS v LHP: .739

Fuku OPS v RHP: .768

Reed OPS v LHP: .839

Kosuke has a better average and OBP against lefties interestingly enough (though both are very minimal differences), but he slugs better against righties.

That's a tiny sample size for both. Over their careers, Reed is 100 points better in OPS than Kosuke.

Yes, that's true. The problem lies in the fact that even when you take their career splits vs. left handers you're dealing with numbers that are small enough that's not a good idea to draw any statistical inferences from them.

In which case you would look to historical #s showing that lefties hit worse against lefties.

Reed has a 1000 career PA against LHP, that's plenty of proof to suggest he's pretty good at it. And while I don't have the evidence, Kosuke should have plenty of career PA against lefties between Japan and MLB. It's probably a safe bet to say Reed hits them better than Kosuke.

Even if we don't have the evidence to draw a certain conclusion, their career numbers are far more meaningful than this year's stats, though. And for their careers, Kosuke has been quite a bit worse against lefties than Reed has.

I meant that Fukudome hits lefties better than he hits righties. At least that was the case last year... I haven't looked at the splits for 09.

EDIT: At least for AVG and OBP he hit better... his SLG was slightly worse against lefties in 08. But, considering all of his home runs came versus righties, that means he made up alot of ground with other extra-base hits.

It's kind of a mixed bag this year:

Vs. Righties he's .275/.399/.421/.820

Vs. Lefties he's .182/.357/.545/.903

Hits for a higher average and gets on base more v/ righties. But he hits for more power against lefties. Go figure.

That's a really really sdmall sampler size for lefties though. His power numbers vs. LHP have been inflated by a couple of homers.

That's sort of odd how the numbers have flip-flopped since 2008... although the difference wasn't that dramatic anyway. In 2008:

vs Righties: .251/.355/.388/.743

vs Lefties: .276/.371/.354/.725
