16th pick overall, last protected pick in the first round.

Should be able to add another quality player to our improving system. Hopefully we have money to spend on a guy who falls because of signability issues or teams don't want to overspend.

After Harper, that's a whole lot of pitching at the top.

If you want to know if there are any kids in your area whether it be HS, JUCO, or 4 yr. college worth a look, let me know what area you're interested in.

Anyone out of South Texas this year? Figured there might be someone out of Moody, Calallen, or Ray.

The best player out of the Corpus Christi area will prob. be Mark Blackmar out of Carroll HS.

Moody has a 3B by the name of Michael Franco committed to Mizzou.

Calallen has a LHP/OF by the name of Rob Zastryzny also committed to Mizzou.

None of these will be high picks and will likely go to college, although Blackmar hasn't signed anywhere yet.

This post makes me happy. Especially since Mizzou is going to suck this year.

Don't put too much stock into it, as I said, them going to college off the bat will likely be caused by a lower ceiling rather than unsignable.

From what I seen, it looks like the two best recruits are a JUCO RH'er by the name of James Hudelson (Jefferson CC) and a HS RH'er out of Overland Park, KS by the name of Jason Adam. These will likely be mid round draftees but nothing of the ceiling of previous Mizzou drafts. It appears to be a down year as far as recruiting for the type of program Mizzou typically runs.

My guess is that's partially due to the team this year. There's only 4 seniors that I see on the roster, and Tepesch is the only remotely draftable junior. Can't be easy convincing draftable talent to go to a situation with that much youth already on the roster.

What about the north (particularly northeast) Louisiana area?

Raleigh?

NC State has a Junior RH'er by the name of Jake Buchanan that should go in the 1st ten rounds as well as former Cubs draftee Kyle Wilson and Russell Wilson who also plays FB. Ray Cotilla is someone that is worth watching as a late draftee.

As far as HS'ers in that area:

Blair Betts out of Athens Drive has a D-I signing at Indiana and the best players from Cary, NC are Grant Shambley (OF) out of Green Hope who is committed to Wake Forest, Brandon Wilson (RHP) out of Cary Academy who is committed to Campbell, and Adam Boghosian (P/OF) out of Green Hope who is committed to UNC Greensboro.

UL-Monroe has a RH'er by the name of James Jones, who is pretty good and will likely drafted in the mid rounds (15-25).

La Tech has a left hander by the name of Mike Jefferson that should go between rounds 3-5 and might be worth the drive down I-20 to Ruston. They also have an OF'er by the name of Devon Dageford that merits watching if go see them.

Not much as far as HS or Juco in that area to watch for.

Thanks. I'll definitely check out the ULM pitcher and will try to see La Tech player as well.

As far as HS'ers in that area:

Blair Betts out of Athens Drive.....

Former Cub Josh Hamilton's school. :D
Brandon Wilson (RHP) out of Cary Academy who is committed to Campbell.....
Go Camels! (That's where I teach.)

I know Brandon personally and Campbell is getting a very good kid that works very hard.

ESPN recently put up a Top pitchers in the draft class preview, with some scouting reports on each guy. Here's the link...

http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog?name=mlb_draft&id=5052589

Can't put it all, but I'll put the list:

1. Jameson Taillon, RHP -- The Woodlands HS

2. A.J. Cole, RHP -- Oviedo HS (Fla.)

3. Karsten Whitson, RHP -- Chipley HS (Fla.)

4. Anthony Ranaudo, RHP -- LSU

5. Deck McGuire, RHP -- Georgia Tech

6. Kevin Gausman, RHP -- Grandview HS (Col.)

7. Adam Plutko, RHP -- Glendora HS (Calif.)

8. Dylan Covey, RHP -- Maranatha HS (Calif.)

9. Drew Pomeranz, LHP -- Mississippi

10. Griffin Murphy, LHP -- Redlands East Valley HS (Calif.)

Note: I left James Paxton (Kentucky) off because he's not likely to pitch until late this month at the earliest. Sale, who fanned 14 over eight innings versus Mercer, lost out to Pomeranz, but would likely be the next name if the list continued, followed by Kaleb Cowart of Cook HS (Ga.) -- who has the stuff and projectability to move well into the upper half of these rankings. Right-hander Stetson Allie, a two-way player from St. Edward HS (Ohio) and Tyrell Jenkins from Henderson HS (Texas) could make moves this spring, too.
