Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. declined to comment on a report saying the Phillies signed Pedro Martinez, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. The report, from CandelaDeportiva.com says Pedro signed after showing off a fastball between 88 and 91 mph and good secondary pitches.

crap...why couldn't the cubs do this?

$$$

Take it a step further than that...who would management be willing to pay that money for in order to bump them out of the rotation? Harden? He's going to get every chance to bounce back as long as he's healthy, as he should. Lilly's been great, Zs turning in a better season than I expected so far, and Wells isn't going anywhere as long as he keeps pitching the way he has been. That pretty much leaves Dempster, whose only a year removed from an All Star appearance, and hasn't really been that bad either. Spending money on Pedro would kind of been the equivalent of going out and getting a Porsche when you already have 5 other similar or faster cars in your 5-car garage.

Yea for those who are saying the Cubs didnt sign Pedro because of money, I highly doubt that. Pedro just passed his physical for the Phils, and his contract is worth.......1 million! With 1.5 in incentives. 1 million bucks is all it took for Pedro, wow.

that's because the season is over half over and Pedro's leverage is significantly less than it was if the offseason

There was still reports as of a couple weeks ago of it costing 5 mil or so for Pedro. My point is it doesnt look like money was the reason for the Cubs not signing Pedro.

It might have been why spend the money on more starting pitching when we need offense. I would have liked to have signed Pedro, but he is not the biggest need right now.

Once Pedro becomes official and if they get Halladay too, they will definitely be on track to repeat.

They're not going to get Halladay.

Last winter the reports were that Pedro wanted $5M to play.

He reportedly stuck to that demand, but it became a prorated $5M once the season began.

Now the season's half over, and he's just signed for $2.5M (if he hits his incentives).

So although the guaranteed amount is only $1M, the total price is basically the same as its always been.

What makes you say this? They have the prospects to get it done and could still use the help in their rotation.

Pedro's on the 15 day DL now apparently.

it's just to get him some minor league starts and to delay having to make an opening on the 25 man roster

They aren't exactly the free spendingest team around.

Pedro Martinez-S-Phillies Sep. 13 - 11:18 pm et

Pedro Martinez shut out the Mets for eight innings to earn a win in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.

Martinez allowed six hits, walked two and struck out seven against a Mets team that showed no interest in bringing him back after last season. While he's definitely had luck on his side, he's now 5-0 with a 2.87 ERA for the Phillies. The only two starts he didn't win were the ones he had cut short by rain delays, and the Phillies ended up prevailing in both of those.

Wow, Id forgotten he was even back.

Now that Wright and Beltran are back, the Mets have been hitting a bit. Obviously, its way too little too late, as they're officially eliminated in both the division and Wild Card, but Pedro has been nothing but solid since he came to the Phillies.
