He just got career win #2000 in a 15 inning marathon game vs Pittsburg.

He's not perfect by any means, but he's absolutely the best manager of his generation... Tony La Russa's loud cries for attention notwithstanding.

i think La Russa is better. Cox in my opinion should have won a lot more with those teams in the 90's. Sure its impressive to have won how many east titles in a row but to only win 1 world series out of it.

Did they not win more World Series because of numerous mistakes Cox made or was it because very good players underperformed (or were beat out by better players - i.e. the Yankees)?

The former is the manager's fault, the latter is not. LaRussa hasn't had quite the talent Cox has enjoyed, but given philosophy, I think Bobby Cox is the better manager.

Considering that since the format changed in 1995, the playoffs have been a complete craps shoot, I'd suggest Cox's lack of WS rings probably has more to do with bad luck than anything.

Agreed.

I think Dusty Baker is underrated. He has taken his teams to the playoffs numerous times.

When I say Bobby Cox is the best active manager, I consider more than simply how many times he's reached the playoffs. It was just brought up and I responded.

Everytime the camera's on him he's swearing. Just reminds me of a dirty old man, complaining because Glavine and Maddux only got 6 inches off the outside corner, not the usual 8 in Atlanta.

Can't stand the guy.

No. Baker has taken a few teams to the playoffs, true. But I'm pretty sure his negatives far outweigh the positives. In fact, I'd probably argue his teams made it to the playoffs in spite of him, not necessarily because of him in most cases.
