Depends how the NHLPA handles things...

We know how they handled it, the NHLPA filed a grievance. An arbitrator will decide. The fact that they paid Barker more than he should have gotten if he was still really just a RFA leads me to believe the Blackhawks think Versteeg has a great case and will likely become an UFA. As an UFA, I don't think the Blackhawks would be due any compensation if Versteeg signed elsewhere. That would be a huge loss.

I'm pretty sure Barker would have gotten that much, at minimum, as an RFA.

Really? Wow.

Even though it didn't look like anybody was prepared to go after him?

Why didn't we just let Barker go and pay Versteeg the money in the first place? If we've got to overpay one and let the other go, I'd rather keep Versteeg.

Really? Wow.

Pretty much all the fans at hfboards.com, which is where I go to read what knowledgeable hockey fans think, were drooling over him and hoping for a much bigger deal.

I never thought Barker was all that special, but I guess I'd have to defer to fans who follow the sport more than I do.

Barker is way, way more valuable than Versteeg in my book.

You have a potential top-pair defenseman vs. a decent winger who came out of nowhere to have a good season last year.

I'm going by what the beat writers are suggesting:

Barker made $984,000 so it's likely the mistake by the Hawks cost them more money in the end to re-sign the defenseman who had 6 goals and 34 assists last season.

Interestingly, his cap hit was $2.4 million last year because of bonuses he didn't reach. The minimum qualifying offer was about $1.1 million, but there was no way he was taking that. The going rate for young defensemen as good as he is is a lot more than that.

As a RFA he didn't have a lot of choice. Somebody actually had to offer more for him to get it. As a soon to be UFA due to incompotent management, that road block cleared. Teams weren't throwing money around like mad, and there were no indications there was a bidding war for him.

You don't need a bidding war to beat $3 million per year for a second-pairing defenseman, let alone one with youth and potential.

You would for a restricted free agent. There's a huge difference between a RFA and a UFA.

I agree with you here. I like Versteeg but he isn't going to be worth his new contract if it is more then $1.5-$2 mill per.

Versteeg signs with Blackhawks 3 years/9.25 million.

This better be false... or this BETTER be a sign and trade... talk about over [expletive] payment.

Upon further investigation, my source says this source is legit and we should be expecting a near immediate move... I like it.

A near immediate move as in an announcement of his signing, or a near immediate move as in a trade? Explain, plz.

Sign and trade... which would be in our best interest... especially if its for draft picks.

With Versteeg signed, someone has to go. There is no chance the Hawks will go into next season over or even at the cap limit. Any ideas who go? Versteeg? Barker? Sharp, Campbell or Huet?

There's no way Huet is going to go anywhere.

I get that, and last check the Hawks were even at the salary cap limit or they were over. Something has to give.

Did you not read Cynosure's posts? He said that Versteeg will be traded.

Depends if they can find a suitor for anyone else... I am sure the Hawks don't WANT to trade Versteeg... they just wanted to get something for him if he were to become an UFA... hence the sign and trade talks.

Also, trading Huet at this point is more or less suicide... Crawford/Niemi duo isn't going to get us anywhere this year.
