I wonder if wed be able to dangle Heilman out there as trade bait, maybe package him witha few prospects to get a 3B or 2B. By keeping Wells around, he likely gets the job Heilman had, but if we trade Heilman, we can keep Ascanio around and they can keep their precious Rule 5 gem. Heilman man not seem like much, but hes one of those guys that a pitching starved team could take a chance on.

Except I don't see many 3B out there to get. The usual names Kuzmanoff, Beltre, Atkins, Mora, DeRosa, Wigginton, etc. certainly aren't worth Heilman (let alone Heilman plus prospects). Also, I would think you want somebody that will accept a backup/pinch hitter role and can probably fill in at other positions. DeRosa/Loretta/Aurilia/Wigginton/Belliard kind of player.

Are you serious? Heilman has sucked his way out of favor with Lou. Guz has won the 7th inning job and Randy Wells the long man. Heilman will be relagated to mop up. I say sell while we can and fill our biggest need.

What makes him a good trade option then?

I'd say wait it out a bit and see if the Ms will think about trading Branyan. That's just about our best option, I think.

Sean Marshall-S-Cubs May. 31 - 6:53 pm et

Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Sean Marshall would be placed into the bullpen following Rich Harden's return.

As suspected. Marshall has received a raw deal at every turn, and it's too bad the Cubs didn't trade him over the winter. He's a legitimate third or fourth starter, as he's demonstrated while posting a 3.83 ERA in his seven starts this season. Randy Wells will start over him for now.

Sounds pretty official now.

Which means it is still going to be hard to get Marshall's inning count higher. :(

Not a great decision, but if its whats best for the team, so be it. As long as Randy Wells keeps it up, leave him in there. If he falters, Marshall will be back. We all know Harden will be needing his breaks, and Marshall will be there. Marshall will still get some starts. Mark my words.

This is a really awful decision.

i don't think it's that bad just because when wells has a bad start or two, knee-jerk lou will put marshall back in. as long as wells pitches well he'll stay in the rotation.

if hendry was going to get another 3rd baseman, it would have happened a few weeks ago.

of course they will sign someone tomorrow :P

Sean Marshall is receiving the 2nd biggest screw job by a pitcher from a Cubs' manager this decade, behind Prior. The only saving grace to this screw job is that he'll still have the use of his arm afterwards.

But seriously, this is ridiculous. Marshall has been hosed at every turn and I'm sick of it.

agreed. as much as i hate having Patton waste space on the roster, i think the Marshall to the pen thing is temporary and may even possibly pay dividends by saving his arm a bit (not that Lou is doing it for that reason).

I agree. If they keep yanking him around, he not only will be ineffective, but he will be worthless as a trade chip.

That is the likely scenerio, but then again, knowing Lou he could decide to go the crazy route and call up Hart or Atkins.
