Plus it's not like we have any better options down in the minors to take Soto's place at this point.

You don't like Chris Robinson hitting about .380 at Iowa?

I do, but I'm skeptical that he's going to keep that up, given that his BABIP is insanely high and that he rarely walks. I've got him neck and neck with Clevenger as the top catching prospect in the system, but I don't think he's ready.

I don't believe he can maintain that .384 .400 .528 line either. Though right now he's probably better defensively than fatsoto.

At this point I still have faith in Geo, but it's slipping. I am starting to get more the feeling that this year will be a disaster for him, and that he will see the light and right the ship in the offseason (figure out the issues, lose some weight, etc) and come back better than ever next year. Not a very hopeful scenario, but it is what it is at this point.

I'd prefer if he'd just lose the weight ASAP since there's 4 freakin' months and over 100 games left in the season. There's no reason for him or anyone else to figure that out after the season.

I still don't understand how a young kid coming off a excellent rookie season shows up fat and the Cubs don't put him on any kind of training program ASAP. If this was done in the Spring he could've been more productive right now. Do we really need to wait for the offseason to get him in shape?

He was in camp with team Puerto Rico for the WBC.

Robinson is better defensively than Thinsoto too; he's arguably the best defensive catcher in the system.

Of course, it seems like anyone can have a .900 OPS in the PCL.

In addition to his troubles at the plate (which improved in May), he's only thrown out 6 of 32 runners. I think his shoulder is still messed up...

I've been wondering about that, too.

He had no ST. All he did in the WBC was sit around and eat, apparently. They had Pudge catching most of the time and he DH'd a couple of times. I don't know if that is the whole of it, but it certainly didn't help.

i usually don't like to speculate about roids when there's no evidence at all, but it's to deny that he's a prime candidate.

i just don't understand how he could have let himself get fat again after he attributed to much of his recent success to shedding the weight. it makes me think about how you sometimes gain weight when you come off steroids.

Any weight change prompts speculation -- if he had shown up looking waifish & having lost more weight from last season, 'roid speculation would also be strong.

It wouldn't surprise me either way.

While this wouldn't absolve him of any suspicion, the minor league testing policy is much more extensive than MLB's isn't it? If the 2007 season were the start of it, wouldn't he have been much more likely to be caught then? The weight loss seems the more likely reason for his improved performance to me, but maybe I'm just being a homer.

I believe the time has come for either sending Soto to the DL or Iowa in both cases he's got to be informed in no uncertain terms to get in shape.

Im surprised nobodys wondeirng if Sotos hurt, at least slightly. It really made no snese pulling Soto, who had a respectable May for Bobby Scales to bunt especially when you have light hitting Blanco and the pitchers spot due up next, and predictably, it blew up in Lous face.

Brenley has been saying the WBC hurt Soto all the way from the start of the seaon to a few weeks back. Now that we are in June you have to wonder if he's healthy. The guy is struggling in so many areas it's not even funny.

It used to be. I quite honestly haven't followed all that closely the supposed beefing up of the MLB policy, so I don't know how wide the gap is currently and the timing of policy changes.

He did attribute his improvement to his previous weight loss, though, so I can't help but wonder if gaining the weight back has affected his performance, in addition to any nagging injury he may have.

There was a story done last year on Soto and Wood that talked about some mail order food plan out of California I think that helped them lose weight. Soto directly said it helped him make the club as a result of the weight loss.

Has anything been confirmed about his weight gain? I can't really tell much of a difference . I thought he looked just as pudgy last year.

I thought he looked significantly larger the first time I saw him this year, and that was before I became disappointed with his performance. Perhaps it's just perception, but he really looks fat.

He's not Prince Fielder fat but I'd say he looks 15 lbs heavier than last year.

No, not Prince fat, but definitely must be hard to squat on those knees for 9 innings 5 times a week fat.
