We have very, very little in the high minors.

We'll be seeing Samardzija at some point... and Jake Fox has been tearing the cover off the ball, but Hoffpaiur has his bench slot unless he learns to play some 3B.

Mitch Atkins and Randy Wells may or may not come up. Ascanio has been starting in the minors... so I have no idea what they have planned for him. Kevin Hart is sitting down there for whenever we need him... but all those guys are righties. If Cotts continues on like this, I'd imagine Gaub might get the call sooner than the lot of us expected.

Get rid of Gathright and bring up Fox. Gathright isn't getting any playing time because of Reed Johnson, and we need some RH power off the bench.

Jake Fox NEEDS to be on this team. He is leading the PCL in Runs (14), Hits (23), Doubles (6), HR (7), RBI (24), TB (54), Slugging (1.041), and OPS (1.549) --- If those numbers dont belong on this team no one does. I dont care if he cant play defense, he would be the best rhh off the bench.

Guab is another good call batters are hitting .141 against, looks like that Dero trade isnt looking that bad-- archer did good in last start 1 bb over 5 inn

Another guys that could go the system this year is Cales, has the devestating slider that could get any ML hitter out

We don't need two one dimensional sluggers in our lineup. If Jake Fox could be a serviceable backup catcher, that's an option but I don't think anyone in the Cubs management thinks that is an option. There's no reason to have Hoffpauir and Fox on the team.

Trade for Patton's rights. Send him down to the minors. Bring up Fox.

If the alternative to Jake Fox is Joey Gathright, you have a couple of guys with a limited amount of dimensions to their game. Gathright is not the primary defensive replacement at the moment, and his pinch-running has some rare value. Jake Fox and Hoffpauir on the same team would give you a right handed and left handed bat off the bench. That being said, we are talking 1-2 at bats per week and an occasional start versus whatever baserunning/defensive advantage you have. You'd also have to figure in the value of playing Fox everyday and allowing him to work on his defense and approach a bit more. With the current complexion of the team, it's probably best that Fox stays where he's at.

If Bradley is healthy, then you can get by with Fox and Hoffpauir in the same lineup. Gathright is never going to start since he's the 3rd or 4th outfielder at every spot, so strictly as a bench player having Fox around might be better. And if Bradley gets hurt again you can swap Fox for Sam Fuld or something(since you'd have to release Gathright) to get that outfield D back. Doubt it happens though, Bradley's too frail and they really like Gathright as a defensive replacement/pinch runner.

I like Cales and all, but you're not going to see him called up this season. He has a nice future, but the guy is down in Daytona and has a long way to go before the Cubs bring him up.

Frankly, I think the Cubs will end up trading for a LHP to replace Cotts. Waddell's done decently so far, but he has a history of control problems and has flyball tendencies. It's also a relative rarity to see a relief pitcher called up to the bigs from AA.

Fox and Hoffpauir wouldnt be so far off from Floyd and Ward, only they're younger and dont have the injury history. With Johnson as a more than serviceable 4th outfielder, and Hoffpauir becoming a respectable 5th, we could live with a guy on board for his bat alone. Granted, another middle infield option would be nice, but we dont have anything major league ready in that department.

Why don't we call up that Paul Maholm kid?

They wouldn't be in the lineup, they'd be on the bench, exactly where you can use one dimensional sluggers and where one dimensional players already take up spots. Gathwright serves no purpose on this team. If, in another month or so, the Johnson/Fukudome combo in CF continues to look sufficient in CF, I'd really like to see them get rid of Gathwright and callup somebody who can bring some sort of offensive off the bench. Fox is probably the only legit option in the minors right now. Although if they found a guy who can play MI, that would be better.

And the Rockies would probably want far too much for him. Unless they get very good value in a trade, they have little incentive to agree to a trade.

Exactly. Right now, of the 6 Cubs outfielders, 5 of them can either play CF sufficiently or has played CF fairly recently. Soriano, Bradley, Fukudome, Johnson and Gathright are all guys who can play CF, so Gathright doesn't really do anything for this team. I'd probably agree that he plays the position better than anyone else on the team. But, for the few innings he'd actually be getting as a defensive replacement, it's just not worth being short a power bat on your bench when you already have fairly weak bats with Miles and Hill.

Johnson grades out below average defensively, relatively easily in fact. I have no idea why you wouldn't consider Fukudome at least adequate, if not stellar/outstanding/additional adjective.

In spite of his awesome catches, I would have figured Reed would be average or so. Maybe that's as a right fielder, though.
