If you had a wreck because the garage that put new tires on your car forgot to tighten the lug nuts and your tire came off, would you just chalk it up to that kind of stuff happens or would it be ok to bitch about the person who couldn't do his job competently?

The only point I am trying to make is that we are not qualified, from this perspective to determine if an umpire if failing. If it was a safe/out call then fine, you can see that. With calling balls and strikes, you can't tell from TV.

if you're watching every pitch from the exact same vantage point, you get a pretty good idea if the umpire how the umpire is calling pitches that appear to be 8 inches off the outer part of the plate. even if your vantage point is wrong you can still tell that the umpire is doing his job poorly.

Everybody who watches baseball thinks they are a qualified evaluator of umpires, most are not.

You are a teacher also, what do you think when parents, or anyone outside of your profession tries to evaluate your skills?

Using your teaching analogy, would you be OK with two kids in the same class having completely different grading scales? What we're seeing is two different strike zones. What is being called a strike for the Cards is not being called a strike for the Cubs.

Just have to disagree on this one, but nothing wrong with that.

Bottom line is Dempster needs to throw strikes and have a quick inning here.

I agree generally that the umpire has a better view of balls and strikes. In fact, I felt most of Dempster's pitches were off the plate by a hair, but they were closer to the plate than the strike to Theriot for example. Furthermore, I'm not calling for the umpire to be fired or anything. I'm just bitching about him.

Others are always evaluating my skills. And unlike umpires, I actually have to listen to their concerns. Oh the fun I'd have if I could deal with parents and outsiders with the arrogance of a MLB umpire.

And if I gave a test and gave one student a correct mark for the same answer I gave another student an incorrect mark on the same answer, I'm sure I'd have to do some explaining to someone.

You may not be able to definitively tell if each pitch is a ball or strike, but you can tell where some things are in respect to other things. For instance, when Theriot was batting the pitch was right over the line marking the front of the lefty batters box. The pitch to Barden with two strikes was between the plate and the line marking the batters box. They were both in the vertical strike zone easily. Therefore, if the pitch to Theriot is a strike then the pitch to Barden is a strike.

For the love of god, why do we give back a run everytime we put one up?? I used to be excited about our rotation, now I just think its just overrated

More and more it looks like starting pitching is more of an issue than bullpen or various slumping players. Haven't had a decent start for a while now.

What do you expect Lou to say Grace? No I expected they would suck, and think they are just hot right now but by mid June, they will be out of it?

Cards are going to be tough this year!

Ya till July, just like last year

i dunno, they have the best hitter in baseball and another one of the top 10 hitters in the game, plus lohse is now a lot better than the back of the rotation guy that he was before he arrived in st. louis. i guess it depends on whether wainwright and carpenter are healthy for the stretch run.
