The one thing trade wise they've been outstanding with is acquiring young pitching. Black, Pinyero for guys you didn't think you'd get much value for.

They've been pretty outstanding with trading in general.

When they do make a trade. Their MO is to hold and hold and hold for high value, even if it means the asset is devalued while you wait. It means they look great in the trades they make, but that loses a bit of its luster when you consider how much value Garza lost or how many guys we got nothing for last year.

Except we got more for Garza than we were rumored to be getting when he had 2 years of control left.

Since I know where you'll be going with this, Jacob Turner was already showing signs of being damaged goods despite his prospect ranking. CJ Edwards was on the massive upswing despite his.

You do love assuming things you can't prove to be real were actually ever the case.

Would you prefer 5 pages of me telling you how crazy you are or can I just do it once?

Not needed. I already replied to you.

Sometimes I honestly think Kyle believes he could do a better job than the front office.

I believe this front office could do a better job than this front office if they wanted to.

That translates to "If they did what I think they should do."

How many guys did we get nothing for that would have been of any consequence?

Dejesus is about the only guy I thought we lost value on. I mean if Baker could net Pinyero surely Dejesus should have been able to net and even more interesting A pitcher in return. But I generally agree they didn't miss out on much, trade wise. I guess you could point to Headley too.

I'm pretty sure Hairston was traded for Pineyro.

1. DeJesus.

2. Schierholz had value last year. He may still have some this summer, but it won't be what it was.

3. Russell had some value last June too.

4. Barney had some value two July's ago.

I think there are definitely some guys they held, whose value subsequently dropped. But, can't sell high on everybody, I don't imagine. And I don't think they wanted to sell everybody.

David Hale is currently in the Braves rotation and was rumored to be the return for Gregg. He's a back-end guy, but it as Kevin freakin Gregg

Marmol was essentially released, and had some value that offseason(or in the least could've been dumped for Haren, only to NT Haren and get out from his contract.)

I don't remember the last time Marmol had value it's been a few years, I don't think we could have gotten anything of value for him that offseason that he was "essentially released".

Marmol wasn't "essentially released" during the offseason. And, like SSR said, at the very least he could've netted Haren.

He couldn't locate his fastball and everybody in baseball knew it.

What does this have to do with that?

Nothing I guess Marmol not being able to throw a fastball over the plate had absolutely nothing to do with his value at all...

Apparently not to the Angels who had a trade in place for him with Dan Haren coming to the Cubs. The Cubs backed out because they didn't like Haren's medicals. Haren was bad last year, but had a team option that the Cubs could've declined, saving them Marmol's dumbass 9.8M contract.

I guess I didn't remember hearing about that. I guess that does suck then...

MESA, Ariz.—The strength of the Cubs farm system is obvious. Up top, they have a trio of elite, homegrown hitting prospects in shortstop Javier Baez (ninth overall, 2011), third baseman Kris Bryant (second, 2013) and center fielder Albert Almora (sixth, 2012).

However, two of the organization’s Top 10 Prospects—righthanders C.J. Edwards and Arodys Vizcaino—were added via trades in the past two years, and team officials believe they might have the makings of a future big league rotation opening the season at Double-A Tennessee.

“Our arms are probably a little bit underrated,” president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. “That said, we need at least twice as many of them as we have now. But I think we’ve done a nice job through the last couple drafts and, especially, through some trades adding to that reserve.”

At the end of the season, the rotation that led the team to the Florida State League title included 2012 sandwich pick Pierce Johnson, plus a trio of righthanders acquired in 2013 trades: Edwards, Ivan Pineyro and Corey Black.

“And that rotation didn’t allow an earned run in the postseason,” Epstein said. “I think it bodes well.”

But Epstein stressed they still don’t have enough arms, and he might consider drafting a pitcher with their first pick at No. 4 overall this year.

“We need to keep pounding it,” he said. “Every trade we make, we try to get an arm. Every time we have a draft pick, we look closely at the best available arm who we can add to the organization.”
