That explains why he had been out nearly a month with a "virus."

Kevin Goldstein was on Keith Law's podcast today and Law introduced Goldstein as "The President of The Junior Lake Fan Club." Is that some sort of joke, or is Goldstein really high on Lake?

Definitely a joke.

It takes a while, but the podcast talks about Jackson and then Baez for several minutes. They didn't really tread on any new territory with Jackson, and then started talking about Baez's future position and it quickly changed to "OMG let me tell you about this home run I saw him hit". They looooove Baez.

Okay, cool. I didn't know what it was about, especially since those guys can be so tongue in cheek at times. But I'm listening to it now, good to hear they get into Cubs stuff (especially Baez)

Helit's possible it went undetected for a while. Hopefully, he comes back from it better than Simpson did. HE went from being looked at by AZPhil as advanced, to getting destroyed awfully quickly with a startling lack of control. This easily could have affected him bigtime before they even got to the bottom of it.

Just finished listening to that podcast with Law/KG and man do they both love Baez. KG said he could see rating his bat and power both at 7's.

That's geared toward Twitter. He seems to think that Lake is a decent enough prospect, but fans get a bit over excited about him last year and early this year. Eventually he started making a joke out of it and fans have been trolling him about Lake ever since. I think he comped him to Wilson Betemit at one point, which sounds about right.

Betemit has had a crazy career.

His OPS by team:

2005 ATL- .794

2006 ATL- .842

2006 LAD- .742

2007 LAD- .834

2007 NYY- .694

2009 CWS- .591

2010 KCR- .889

2011 KCR- .750

2011 DET- .871

2012 BAL- .752

He's been in and out of the majors, and he's been pretty good at times, OK at times, and terrible at times. His numbers in the minors are all over the place too. At his peak, he was the 8th rated overall prospect in baseball.

Mike (Denver): Hi Jim. What are your thoughts on the return for Ryan Dempster (specifically Christian Villaneuva)? Where would he and Arodys Vizcaino fall in the Cubs Top 10 prospects? Thanks.

Jim Callis: Getting Randall Delgado from the Braves for Dempster would have been better, but I like Villanueva. He's a very toolsy third baseman. I think both he and Vizcaino would fit in the 5-7 range on a Cubs Top 10.

Harvey (Scituate, MA): The Cubs have had a black-hole at C for a couple years now. Does the trade of Soto portend good things for Welington Castillo? He's always had good pop for a catching prospect. In a platoon with Clevenger, I see him eventually emerging on top.

Jim Callis: I think it portends more that the Cubs didn't want to pay a declining Soto $5 million or so next year. Castillo and Clevenger should both get a chance at some regular playing time, with Castillo having the better chance to be the regular.

Jon (Tulsa): I've seen widely-varying positions on the Braves-Cubs deal. Some think Vizcaino was too high a price for 1 1/3 years of Maholm and 2 months of Johnson. Others think he is destined to be a reliever and is rehabbing from TJ surgery, so it made a lot of sense for the Braves. I fall in the latter camp (though I don't like seeing Vizcaino go), but what are your thoughts?

Jim Callis: I can see where both sides are coming from. The Braves get two complementary players who can help them for a guy who wouldn't have helped them much if at all before 2014. Vizcaino doesn't have a history of durability. On the other hand, the Cubs get a high-upside guy who was untouchable in trade talks a year ago for two guys who don't figure in their long-term plans. Makes sense to me.

Dave (DC): Who would you rather have if you were the Cubs, the higher ceiling, but risky Vizcaino, or the lower ceiling but Major League Ready Delgado?

Jim Callis: Delgado, because of the better health and better chance to be a starter.

I like him better when he's not pitching.

I wonder if he's just figured into the price for Soler at this point.

I'm much more likely to give him the benefit of the doubt now, than before. When he got here, AZPhil liked what he saw. It's possible he got sick earlier than when he was taken out of the rotation. New to the country, just signed a big contract, possible he wanted to just try and get through it, since he's supposedly a high makeup guy. Pure speculation by me though. That said, I hope he comes back better than Simpson did.

A pitcher who has to go through double amputation of both his arms would have a better comeback than Simpson did. I think Concepcion can at least come back and figure it out as a LOOGY (not that, that's what he was paid all that money for).

Sickels did one of his "all questions answered" threads.

Most interesting things he had to say were about Villanueva. Said that preliminarily, he'd put him in the 4-8 range in our system. Then he said that if you don't include Baez, our 3b prospects would be Vitters/Villnueva/Candelario in that order.

On Vogelbach:

" the bat is real in my view. we’ll have to see how the BA/OBP hold up against better pitching, but I love his power."
