Geovany Soto-C- Cubs Apr. 9 - 10:24 am et

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs are bracing for the possibility that Geovany Soto (shoulder) could land on the disabled list.

Soto had a similar shoulder issue while he was in Triple-A, and it cost him a little over a week. ''From talking to him, it lasted a week or so [the first time],'' manager Lou Piniella said. ''Let's hope it doesn't. If it's going to be that long, I'm not so sure we can stay with one catcher.'' Koyie Hill filled in Wednesday and Mark Johnson is just a phone call away.

Im surpirsed that this thread has been started yet. I know were all hoping for the best, but there is a chance that Geo could be headed for a DL stint, be it a short one. If he is, do we really want a catching tandem of Koyie Hill, who looked flat out lost at the plate and 57 year old journeyman catcher Mark Johnson, or is there any chance that theyd bring up Jake Fox. I knoe that his catching skills are sub-sub par at best, but would his offense be worth it? If Geo were put on the 15 day, retroactive to yesterday, it would only be 10 or 11 games were talking about, with Fox maybe catching 2 of them. How much damage could he really do in 2 games?

But it's worthy of its own thread. Although I think that blurb takes the article out of context a bit. I'm sure the Cubs are checking their options, but all indications from Soto himself are that he should be able to play on Friday from what I've seen.

The jist is that Soto said last time he felt it, it lasted a week and go away, and Lou said he couldnt go a full week with only 1 catcher, so hed have to DL him.

Then again, we weant almost 3 1/2 years with Michael Barrett behind the plate, so could Miles, Fontenot, or Theriot really be any worse?

Its been a while just got back stateside a couple weeks ago. If Geo does get DL'd who'll get the call up Johnson?

That's what the Trib said today. What's Paul Bako doing these days?

Pretty sure the previous poster was talking from a defensive perspective. I need no lecture on Barrett's awesomeness.

Plus, he punched AJ.

What if Soto is DLd?

The Sun will be a little less bright.

The day will be a little less fun.

Life will be that little bit more mundane.

I will be a sad puppy. :(

I disagree with Lou. If Soto can return in a week you don't DL him and lose him for 15 days. You go with Hill full time or else send Gathright down temporarily and call up Johnson.

You can't go a week with one catcher, especially one with no track record and a mangled hand.

Look at it this way, though:

Anything that lands Soto on the DL would kill a mortal man.

Good point, but my other option (sending Gathtight down and bringing up Johnson) should work. I'd rather be without Gathright for 10 days (the minimum length of a minor league assignment) that Soto for 15.

I'd be fine with that, but doesn't he have to clear waivers?

I'm not sure that you can take someone off the 40 man roster and then add them back again so quickly. Plus, Gathright might refuse to go down to AAA. Also, I doubt the Cubs would want to expose him to other teams and possibly lose him.

Is he out of options? If so it might need to be Hoffpauir instead. I was thinking in terms of optioning Gathright, but maybe that's not possible.

Gathright is out of options.

Soto going on the DL would immediately make the Cardinals the best NL Central team.

correction: Best team in the history of baseball.

I am embarrassed by my egregious mistake. Please don't ban me.
