It would be a good move by the Reds whose impact would be a negated by their manager.

But then again, most moves are like that for the Reds.

Mets Close To Signing Gary Sheffield

By Tim Dierkes [April 3 at 11:23am CST]

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets are close to signing Gary Sheffield. The Mets plan to give him significant playing time. They'd only have to pay $400K and would consider Sheffield an option in both outfield corners. Sherman's source said:

"Unless something drastic happens, he is a Met. Someone would have to offer him a second year, and I just don't see that happening."

David Lennon of Newsday believes Sheffield could sign with the Mets as soon as tonight.

Sheff would be better off playing in GABP under Dusty, who would never sit him.

If he's thinking about his next contract or playing time then playing for the Reds is probably the best choice. The Mets give him a better shot at the postseason though. Considering he'll be 41 next year and won't be getting paid much anyway (in comparison to the $150M+ he's already earned) I don't blame him.

If he puts up a decent season this year, he'll easily grab a DH job next year. Most teams that might have had interest had already filled all of their vacancies prior to Sheffield's release.

Sheffield has signed with the Mets per ESPN. Trying to find contract info.

edit: New York Post reporting the Mets are only on the hook for $400,000, with the Tigers picking up the other $14 million. He's signed for this year only, and wants significant playing time so he can cash in next offseason on the FA market. Good luck with that, Sheff.

the contract is just the standard for picking up someone who was cut I think, right? Or does that not apply since he wasn't claimed off waivers?

league min is standard because any more doesn't go to sheff, it offsets the $ the tigers owe him

It wouldn't apply if he WAS claimed off waivers. Then the team claiming him would have been responsible for the entire contract and the Tigers would have been off the hook.

Quicker bat, Sheffield or Bonds?

in their prime or today?

I think Bonds was quicker. Sheffield's entire approach at the plate was more violent and involved more movement, but I think Bonds always had the quicker bat.

Can't disagree. Bonds had the quicker bat, but I've never seen anybody with quicker wrists then Gary Sheffield.

Eric Davis. Quickest hands ever.

Not to me. I mean when you have to do the bat wiggle that Sheffield does, JUST to slow down your wrists, then my god...
