Hows about assuming that Patton doesnt make the opening day roster, send the Rockies Gaudin, Jake Fox or Sam Fuld, and a fringe pitching prospect for Patton and Jeff baker.

That definitely qualifies.

You mean getting rid of a mop up guy, a guy who will never make the Cubs aside from September call ups, and a PTBNL type of pitcher for a guy whose looked great in ST and a solid back up infielder who can play multiple positions?

The base of the deal would be Gaudin for Baker, which doesnt sound bad at all to me.

Exactly. Colorado would laugh then hang up.

Gotcha, for them, not us. Still Colorodo is a pitching starved team who might welcome a swingman like Gaudin who has had some major league success, and theyve been openly shopping Baker for pitching. There not going to get a front end pitcher for the guy, probably not even a number 4 starter, so I could see them considering Gaudin.

If I'm another team, I view Gaudin as a great by-low candidate on a guy whose had major league success and still has his peak years in front of him. He's in a funk, he'll bounce back.

Nationals trade Adam Dunn for garbage. Got it.

i'm assuming the cash involved was somewhere in the $75 million range

hmm let's trade them enough cash for dunn so they can sign strasburg.

Posted
The Orioles have given up the most runs in baseball (as of Friday anyway). THey have Ty Wiggington whom would have signed if he didn't have LH tunnel vision. Cubs get Wiggington for Patton- whom the O's could use and much more easily hide on their roster all season- Hart or Wells and another lower level prospect.

Rather the Nats get him than a better team. I dont think that even the most negative of the NSBB Chicken Littles will tell you that The Cubs will finish bad enough to be able to get anywhere near him.

How the Cubs finish this season will not impact their draft status this June.

Right. Either way, why should we care if the Nats get Strasberg then?

I wouldn't mind seeing the Nats get him, since I live about 10 miles outside of DC. I'd probably have more opportunities to see him pitch if they signed him.

George Sherrill has lost his closer job with the O's. Maybe they'd take Gregg and something else for Sherrill. The Cubs would then have a LH set up man in Sherrill so they won't feel compelled to use Cotts in every single game. Marmol moves into the closer role with Guzman, Old Style and Sherill setting him up. Patton and Cotts are relagated to mop up/ 5th-6th inning guys.

Gregg, Stevens and Jake Fox for Sherill.

Posted
The reason Sherill lost said closer job is because hes not any better than Gregg, so why would we give up Gregg AND something else for him, unless something else is Aaron Miles and Joey Gathright.

Because Sherill is LH and that is important to Piniella and Hendry. Also, over the long haul I'd expect Sherrill to be better than Gregg. Sherrill would also be under the Cubs control next year where Gregg is a FA.

I think the intention is to groom Marmol for the closer role. I would be interested in Jose valverde, who I believe is up for free agency, but if we cant find an upgrade, Id just assume go with Gregg and Marmol.

There should be a decent amount of closers/good late inning guys available around the deadline,

Sherill- probably 7/8 inning with us

Cordero-if the Reds make him available and we take on most of the contract

Valverde- I pray to god that he never becomes a Cub he is one of my least favorite players in MLB

Nathan-FA after this year? might be on the block if Twins fall out

Street- FA after the year, hasn't been that good in the last year or so, but would probably be somewhat cheap

Mike Gonzalez/Rafael Soriano- if the Braves fall out of it both could be made available but both would probably be used in 6/7 inning roles.

Scot Shields-Angels could make him available with their lack of SP depth and Arredondo/Fuentes at the back end. Shields has struggled early on, but he has been a very good 7/8 inning guy the last few years

Capps?

anyone on the A's/Padres that could be made available?

Posted
Nathan is signed through at least 2011.

Yeah I know he was scheduled to be a FA after this year, but I forgot he signed an extension last year/offseason.

Posted
Sherrill right now would be a buy low opportunity. By the trade deadline he'd be prohibitively expensive given his talent and how the Cubs would use him. Despite his bad start this year (Which actually hasn't been as bad as either Gregg or Marmol for that matter) he's still geting LH out. It's a small sample size but the O's must take it seriously if they are already demoting him.

Here's another dumb trade idea: Lee to the White Sox for Contreras. Lee has been struggling and Contreras has been relegated to the pen. Contreras replaces Patton and maybe gets his act together as the long man/ spot starter. By going to the Sox, Lee doesn't have to relocate his family.

The Sox don't need him but otherwise it's a win for everyone.

Now that one certainly qualifies.
