Retiring numbers is a sign of respect for the player and a symbol that the organization respects what that player did. By some logic here, the Cubs should not have retired Jackie Robinson's number.

Regardless of the years that Maddux Played elsewhere, the Cubs produced the best Pitcher to play in the last 20 years. That alone is enough to retire his jersey.

So Detroit should retire Smoltz's number?

No, they should retire Glavine's.

Snark aside, you don't see the difference between Maddux's Cub career and Smoltz's Tiger career?

Or their careers as a whole?

Of course it's two completely different circumstances, but the bolded part of his post is ridiculous.

If you're going to argue against Maddux's being retired, you should probably argue against Fergie too. Jenkins's career with the Cubs isn't that spectacular or long.

there's a big difference; jenkins spent the prime of his career with the cubs while maddux really only had one great year as a cub and then built his hall of fame resume in another uniform.

The Cubs have been EXTREMELY stingy when it comes to retiring numbers. At this point, they've only retired 3, and only 2 of those are Hall of Famers. Maddux will be the first Cub to have his number retired but wear another team's cap when he goes into the Hall

but their numbers as cubs are incredibly similar.

I know Sammy is persona non grata in Wrigley these days, but the only reason his number isn't up there is because of stupid BS politics. Any other team would have retired his number by now. He has done as much for this team as any other guy up there. He was the only reason to watch those sorry-ass teams in 99, 2000, and 2002.

Seriously, I wanted to vomit when I saw Marquis with #21.

If Maddux's '89 wasn't great, then Jenkins only had 1 great year too.

And Derwood they've retired 4 numbers: Banks, Williams, Sandberg, Santo. Gabby should be on there but he kept changing #s.

Sweet. No. 21 should be next.

uh, #8 and this isn't even close.

Michael Barrett wasn't that good dude...

Dude, he punched out AJ. Stats don't matter, he is revered by fans forever for that.

with the replies to my questioning some logic in this thread, it makes sense why they don't see the logic. They dont get it. Smoltz, Sandberg, et al, were not players on their respective teams. Maddux was drafted, developed, performed at a high level twice and reached career milestones with the Cubs.

This is more emotional for those negative people on this subject then logical. This is a perfect example of how stats can make any argument see appropriate. Stats are not the whole story.

If Maddux goes into the Hall as a Cub does this change any opinions?

There's absolutely no way that's going to happen.

i guess great is relative in this case... maddux was much greatER after he left the cubs; jenkins had his best years with the cubs.

As SSR said, 4. The point remains though.

I think theres a good chance it will happen with a new owner on board. He wouldn't have the political BS past with Sammy.

Plus they may wait until he is in the Hall.

Also worth noting, it is occupied for the next three years.

Bradley, I'm pretty sure.

Better than Marquis, at least.

Yes, Bradley is wearing it - and yes, it's better than marquis.

I agree, marquis with that number made me sick. There is no reason that Sammy's number shouldn't be retired even if he did take PED's. Even more so since it's been five or so years now and there's still been no evidence to come out against him.

#21 WILL be retired eventually. Time heals old wounds. Fergie wasn't always on the best terms with the Cubs either. So I suspect the same can be said for Sammy as well.

Also, can someone explain the Gracie hatred that some people seem to have? I realize he could personally be a bit slimy at times, but I just don't get the disdain that some have for him.

Well, he wasn't nearly as good as his reputation and he acted like a child when the Cubs refused to offer him a contract he didn't deserve (and he ultimately had to settle for much less from Arizona). Plus, he's just a smug dude. But the disdain is probably wearing off.
