Few are really talking about it, but the Yanks picked the worst time in 70+ years to build a new stadium.

They picked a great time. Any sooner and they would have gotten less of a deal, any later and they wouldn't have gotten a deal.

I suppose from that perspective. From the seat selling perspective, not so good.

Selling seats in this economy is going to be tough, regardless of whether or not they have a new stadium. At least since it's new there is added incentive for people to keep paying during the tight times. If this was just another year at the old dump they may have taken a harder hit.

The article didn't make it very clear, but apparently the only seats available are $350 each. You have to buy at least an 11-game plan, so the minimum price you'll pay is $3850. And all 11 games are on weekdays.

As far as non-$350 seats, they've sold so many season tickets this year that there may not be any tickets left for a single-game sale for the general public.

They're having no trouble selling seats. They're just finding it difficult to convince people to pay $3800 for great seats to crappy games.

A friend of mine said he heard on the radio that season tickets for field level seats down the 3rd base line cost $50,000 a season. Not sure how truthful that is, but if it's true that's absurd

http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/nyy/components/ballpark/seating_pricing_full_game_plans.pdf

the highest price listed for field-level seats is $325 per seat, or $26,500 for the entire year. that doesn't include the "legends" seats which are right at field level and start at $500, which is $40,500 for the entire year. apparently the most expensive seats, the front row seats at field level, are $2,500 per seat, which is $202,500 for the year.

needless to say, i won't be attending any games in these seating locations.

When you say "a deal", you mean taxpayer money from an already cash-strapped city and state?

And did New Yankee Stadium really need to cost well over $1 billion? (Same with Citi Field and the Dallas Cowboys new place.)

The Yankees are greedy.

How so? The Yankees have fans that have the cash to spend more than many make in a year to sit in a seat. If you can make money, why shouldn't you?

yeah they also have a lot of very rich corporations based in NYC. i would guess that 95% of the very expensive seats are sold to companies who either take customers to games, or reward their employees with great seats for a ballgame. they're not expecting joe blow to drop 200 grand on a season ticket.

There's a good amount fewer of those now.

I just hope that if/when a new Wrigley Field is built, it's not some $1 billion or more* overdone palace to the rich.

The Cardinals showed that you can build a perfectly decent modern ballpark for $350 million. Yeah, Busch III has issues. But new Yankee Stadium already has some negatives already called out before opening.

-Batters eye restaurant blocks some bleacher seats view

-posts block views

-Monument Park is under the stands.

*(In today's money.)

They have just priced themselves right out of what people can afford these days. I think that someone else said it right ... even the rich companies can not afford to buy the tickets to givre away as promototions.

They are just too much

Again, we're only talking about a very limited number of premium seats.

There are still Dugout Box seats available for Cubs games at $350 each.

If they really wanted to be efficient, the Cubs and Yankees would lower the prices on their premium seats and raise prices on everything else.

While yes it may only be the dugout seats imagine 350 per ticket. To take a family to the game and site there is over 1400 + beer + hotdogs + parking + jerseys. Only limited people can afford to do that these days and even those richer type people are cutting back.

Wow ... that's a ton of loot.

And the companies that used those tickets to take out and wow a client or customer are cutting back too.

It doesn't really take away from your point - but why jerseys?

I didn't go to many games when I was a kid. But when I did, we brought in a bag of peanuts, maybe bought a coke, and that was it. There's no reason why you have to buy all that extra stuff, and there's really no reason why you have to buy a hat, or any merchandise for that matter. I don't get why they always talk about the price of 4 tickets, 4 dogs, 4 drinks plus merchandise. Buy your ticket, eat beforehand and enjoy the game if cost is an issue.
