If Pudge could effectively back up 1st, 3rd, and C, he would be an excellent choice. I'm unaware of how well he would do at at 1st and 3rd.

I'm sure he could do at least a passable job at first. Hell, we put blanco there a couple times last year and it wasn't too big of a disaster. Third on the other hand, I have no idea.

I wouldn't be worried about first either. Third is where I'd have the most concerns. If Ramirez went down for a few weeks, I'd hope Pudge could handle it.

it's very unlikely that a guy who has caught his entire career could pick up third base and be adequate at it in his late 30s. he's not a good hitter any more so he'd probably end up giving you aaron miles-like offense and ryan braun-like defense. in other words it would be train wreck.

The astros apparently are interested:

According to CBSSports.com, the Astros have some interest in free agent Ivan Rodriguez.

It's not clear how serious they are, however. The 'Stros already have Humberto Quintero, J.R. Towles and Lou Palmisano in camp, but they're hitting just .170 (8-for-47) collectively. The Marlins, Giants and Twins have also shown some level of interest in Pudge.

on XM this morning they mentioned the Giants as being in contact along with Marlins.

Yeah, rotoworld reported a couple days ago that the giants, marlins, and twins were interested.

Why would the Astros want Pudge when they have Towles?

Why did the Cubs want Edmonds, when we had Pie?

Because the cubs actually had a chance at the playoffs last year?

Plus just because you catch lightning in a bottle once with an over the hill veteran doesn't mean other teams should start trying it
