I suppose a new topic for this draft would be prudent.

Does the draft order follow the same as the major league draft, with the snaking? If so, I guess that gives me the first selection.

Also, what will the rules be for the actual 2009 amateur draftees? Wait until next year to draft them, or are they eligible come the first week of June?

Last year we did waiver wire runs once a month and some of those included June draftees (depends on when they make it into Sportsline's free agent list). We'll likely do something later in the year to account for newly added minor leaguers, whether it's a draft or a waiver run.

I am leaning toward a once a year prospect draft that includes all players in baseball - no 2009 draftees. We can hold this draft in late June starting this year. In other words, we'll have a draft now and then another one in June.

The draft order will follow the reverse of last years standings and snake. You cannot have more than 10 minor leaguers at any point during the draft so you will have to release someone if you reach ten minor leaguers.

Given the randomness of when players get added to the database I think this is the best method.

Lets get this rolling - you can draft anyone in US professional baseball non-independent leagues - they don't need to be in the database. We will hold the next prospect draft in September after the signing deadline. From then on, it will be once a year.

Prospects can only be picked up off waivers after they make their major league debut (ie get called up).

That's going to be more challenging to keep track of then when players get added to the database. At least there you have the "new additions" link you can scout in one shot. With this rule, you've got to keep a list of players you are interested in and keep an eye on that entire list on a daily basis to see if any have made their debuts.

I'm not against this as this is the type of thing that will benefit a manager like me. But I think it'll hose many managers worse than the current system.

Really? Do you think many worthwhile prospects get called up without a bunch of fanfare? How many in a year get called up that are worthwhile and not on someone's roster already?

Well, if we're starting and I'm first and any available prospect is fair game, I'll draft Buster Posey.

shocking choice. I think he is in the database so you can go ahead and pick him up.

Who's next? Fighting Manginos, Valenzuela's Screwballs.

just remember that you must maintain 10 on your minor league roster - so if you pick someone that would make you have more than 10, you must drop someone, or move them to the majors until after you legalize your roster.

Manginos takes Gordon Beckham, SS CHW. Go Sox!

What? How did this happen? A Sox fan is amongst us

Does someone have the tar and feathers ready :club:

Do not want to belabor this point, but I tend to agree with Tim on this. I liked the way we ran it last year. True, I missed out on the chance to pick up a few prospects, but then I could search and find prospects when I had the time and the need to do so.

But again, we can try it this year and change it next year if this process becomes cumbersome and most of the changes that we have made over the years have been positive, so I am done venting.
