Thought this was worthy of its own thread if true...

ESPN's Peter Gammons said there's a "very good chance" the rest of the 104 names of players to test positive for PEDs in 2003 will be revealed within the next month.

Gammons expects the leak to come at the federal level. If he's right, it could cast a huge shadow over the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

As much as I'd like to see that list, I really don't want to see it since it could really set baseball back a lot. I know I won't really care, and most people here won't care, but the casual fan will care and it would be highly damaging to the sports

yeah unless it is every good player who played between 1992-2008 i don't think it'll be that damaging. all it will confirm is that a lot of baseball players were using steroids, and i think the public already knows or at least assumes that.

Maybe this is what baseball needs.

I liken it to someone addicted to drugs or alcohol. Sometimes they have to hit rock bottom before they realize they're in need of some serious help. Maybe this is baseball's "rock bottom."

It will only confirm the ones that were on steroids and stupid enough to get caught with advance notice of the testing provided to the players. I'm sure many players who were smart enough to realize the names would be eventually leaked stopped prior to the testing. That is why union claims of only 104 out of 1,200 players doing steroids are silly.

Release the list so there is enough data to determine what kind of an effect, if any, steroids have on baseball performance.

Correlation does not equal causation.

Take the results from medical studies on steroid effectiveness and plug them into physics equations. That's how you get an idea of what kind of effect they have. Your proposal wouldn't prove anything. ARod and Bonds were going to the HoF if they never touched a needle... some other people on that list probably were too. Big names using them doesn't mean anything... it doesn't even mean that's why they became big names.

Bonds yes, but ARod? It's likely that he would have made it, but he was only 26 years old, so he was by no means a guaranteed Hall of Famer.

If you survive this one Sammy, I'll start to believe you.

The problem is that none of these lists are complete... so if he isn't on this one, maybe he'll be on the next one or the next one after that, or his brother's mistress's cousin will write a book in 10 years that contains damning evidence. Where does it end? The fact that a player isn't on the 2003 list in no way proves their innocence. All it proves is that they didn't fail a test at that time. I'm 99% convinced that Sosa used steroids, but I don't need a list to prove that to me and at this point I don't see any benefit in the continued leaking of names.

Bet it won't.

I think the general public perception on baseball would be more damaged than it already is, assuming the other players on the list are some big name athletes. Steroids, presumably, helped save baseball and now it would appear it's going to cause the most damage to the sport.

Me personally I could care less, as I'm sure most people here would also share that sentiment. We love baseball more than the average fan, so much so we make it part of our daily lives via this message board. There isn't much that will phase out our interest in the sport. But to the average fan, I think their perception of the sport will be very badly damaged if the names on the rest of that list include some highly touted players. It won't be utterly destroyed, but it will take people at least a little bit before they can watch baseball the same way they did back when they didn't think anything was terribly wrong. If the list includes just a few big names, but mostly minor leaguers or journeymen, then yeah, not many people will care. I don't think it will end up that way though, but that's just my unfounded opinion

Except that you're dealing with humans and not controlled experiments. My proposal is to compare the expected numbers with the actual numbers put up by those on steroids, just as J.C. Bradbury attempted to do with Arod here: http://www.sabernomics.com/sabernomics/index.php/2009/02/what-impact-did-steroids-have-on-alex-rodriguezs-home-run-performance/

With hundreds of names, and the knowledge of what years they were definitely using steroids, I believe my proposal would go a long way towards proving something.

i'd give anything for jeter to be on this list.

I'd give anything for Greg Maddux, David Wells, and Hector Villanueva to be on the list.

Personally I'm hoping Manny is on the list.

that would be nice but manny is pretty much hated already. i want the golden boy to be named so i can watch the media react to it.

I want every analyst on MLB Network named on the list: Al Leiter, Sean Casey...the lot of them. Then they can explain why they've been blasting A-Rod these past few weeks

I want Neifi Perez on the list. Just to show that their performance-enhancing aspect is questionable in baseball.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not.

My sarcasm detector is broken. I slept like crap last night and had to deal with a crabby infant all day.

My neighbor's coworker's boss's hairdresser's mailman's illicit lover's husband's shrink's investment banker's parole officer said he saw Sammy using. :D
