Murton value has fallen alot over the last few years, he was traded for some infielder that was the Rockies 26th best prospect, and unclaimed in the rule 5 draft back in December.

Rockies Acquire Matt Murton

By Tim Dierkes [February 4 at 12:10pm CST]

According to a press release, the Rockies acquired outfielder Matt Murton from the A's for infielder Corey Wimberly.

Murton, 27, has a career line of .288/.354/.438 in 1002 plate appearances. He's been involved in two big trades - the Nomar Garciaparra deal in '04 and the Rich Harden trade last year. Murton spent most of '08 in the minors and did not show much power.

Wimberly, 25, ranked as the Rockies' 26th-best prospect in the '09 Baseball America Handbook. He went unclaimed in the Rule 5 draft in December after hitting .291/.370/.345 in Double A. The speedster is said to be in the Bip Roberts mold, according to BA.

While I am glad that Murton is going somewhere where he might have a chance to make a difference, the best part about this deal is that it gave a writer a chance to bring up a rare Bip Roberts reference.

I'm a little surprised Beane didn't hang onto Murton. He's not idea for a large market club, but I'd think he'd be extremely valuable to a small market club like Oakland.

Not sure how long his contract lasts, but he'll be a nice, cheap option for Colorado.

He was like 17 guys deep on their depth chart

Coors Field isn't going to help Murton much because of those mighty hacks of his that produce groundballs directly to the shortstop.

If you actually break down the player Murton into his assets all of a sudden you realize the guy isn't really good at anything. Like, if there was a 50 man active roster he might have a place on the Nationals.

I knew they were pretty deep in the outfield, but not that deep. Oh well, he should get a shot with the Rockies.

Anybody know what Murton's minor league numbers were last year?

.277 BA .345 OBP .423 SLG .768 OPS at Sacramento with 1 HR and 13 RBIs

.298 BA .397 OBP .382 SLG .779 OPS at Iowa with 1 HR and 15 RBIs

Coors field may boost his offense but it will certainly diminish what ever defensive skills he had. Imagine him trying to run down a ball in the gap. I agree with badnews, Murton is just not as good as everyone thinks he is, rather, wants him to be.

The air wont help the line drives go over the wall but the amount of space should be good for his ave. and dbs.

I'm not sure about the doubles and avg thing you said. I learned earlier, in another thread, that large ballparks hurt your batting average and doubles. At least that's what I read into peoples excuses as to why Greene struggled in Petco. Apparently large outfields are bad for hitters when it should be understood that large outfields are bad for bad hitters.
