Gaudin is more than adequate as a fill-in starter.

How is he more than adequate? He was pretty disappointing for the Cubs last year, his career has been underwhelming. He's had a 6.5k/9 and 4.1bb/9 in his career, with a 1.52 WHIP. He did alright last year in a handful of starts. But to suggesting he's anything more than adequate is unnecessarily praising mediocrity. He's probably going to be adequate if he has to start a couple games. Hopefully they don't have to go with Heilman, Marshall and Gaudin starting in the same rotation though.

gaudin is more like the exact definition of adequate as a fill-in starter. if somebody's hurt for a while and he becomes a regular starter, you need to go back to looking elsewhere.

he started throwing first-pitch strikes with more regularity and consequently cut down on his walks. he pitched great in 07 before wearing down in the 2nd half due to the highest innings total of his career. and he's still just 25.

His first-pitch strike percentage in 2008 was 60.7%, third out of four seasons in his career and right around his career average of 58.7.

I think there is something to the "wearing down" theory, because his 2007 was out of whack with his other season's, and that that was where he threw the most pitches.

He doesn't appear to have it in him to be a full-time starter.

Are we getting ahead of ourselves when we assume Marshall can just take over Marquis' load seamlessly? I love Marshall, but the guy has never thrown over 125 innings in a season in his career. Is he durable enough to give us 180-200 IP? Edited by ConstableRabbit

Probably not. Even if Harden is healthy, my best-case scenario would be to have Marshall start most of the season and get Samardzija some time starting as well.

yeah i guess he did it less often than in 05 when he threw 13 mfing innings, for whatever that's worth.

and it's comparable to his approach in 06 when he had the best results of his young career. the worst projection for him i can find is like 4.30 FIP. yeah, an above average pitcher is more than adequate to be your 6th or 7th man in the rotation. i stand by what i said.

FWIW, Marshall threw 148.1 IP in 2006 and 134 in 2007. Essentially, we need a combined 400 IP out of Harden, Marshall, Heilman, Samardzija, and Gaudin. I think that's pretty easily done, and as long as there isn't a combination of multiple guys getting hurt plus multiple guys falling on their face performance-wise, I think it'll be more than okay from a production standpoint.

I guess that's another way of thinking of it. I just worry about keeping everyone fresh and stretched out in case of injury or ineffectiveness.

If Heilman or Gaudin are taking up too much of that 400 IP, it could very easily be a big problem. I didn't include Samardzija in that list, because I don't think he'll be pitching unless he's pitching really well.

Heh at this point I expect Hendry to sing Looper to a Marquis like deal.

I hope Looper didn't go to Notre Dame.

Nope, Wichita State.

Wichita State is in Hendry's old conference. Perhaps he loves MoVal guys just as much as he does ND guys.

Not many opposing schools in MVC are very endearing towards WSU and their coach.

Woot! Big Bad Ben.

Gaudin has started 50 Major league games, and has a career 4.71 era as a SP. Ten of those starts came when he was 20-22 years old, over the last two years he has had a 4.32 era in 40 starts. Gaudin has been around for a little while, so I don't think some people realize how young he is still. Personally I feel he could step in the rotation and give us a 4.40-4.50 era in 28-30 starts next year easily. But that could be why I feel much better about next season then most. Heilman is a bit of a wild card, I think he could turn into a pretty solid starter(better then Marshall and Gaudin). But we shouldn't count on it at all, with him not starting since 05. I do think Heilman has the potential to be Kerry Wood like good out of the pen though.
