Is there any rule/regulation against a team selecting him in the draft this year?

He hasn't graduated from HS or received his GED and gone to one year of junior college.

Plus he'd never sign for anything less than #1 overall money. Which brings up an interesting point: if the Nats do finish last again, will they be able to sign him after giving Strasburg what looks to be an all time record contract/ signing bonus?

I don't really like to pick on 16 year olds, but the kid sounds like a d-bag. Obviously talented, but part of me hopes it's not as easy for him as he expects.

There is a history of guys like this totally NOT living up to expectations and fading away or going down in flames. Todd Morinovich, LaBradford Smith, and Brian Taylor come to mind. On the other hand so do Tiger Woods, Derek Jeter, and A-Rod.

Jeter wasn't in this class though, was he? I mean, he was good, but he was not a no-doubt number 1 overall pick good.

That was a really good article. I did a lot of the travel baseball stuff when I was in high school, and part of the reason I gave it up was because of all the work that went into it and the weekends that were lost just weren't worth it to me... I definitely didn't think I was going to be drafted, so I wanted to hang out with friends, etc instead.

Hope this kid does well, though. I am sure he will. If only he could get on the Cubs :-))

Jeter wasn't even a #1 pick overall - he was drafted 6th overall.

Jeter was the first HS player chosen in the draft and was considered by many the best SS prospect in years. Baseball America was all over him. The only reason I know this is that I was teaching in Kalamazoo at the time and his sister was one of my students. Jeter was considered a can't miss prospect.

He wasn't in Harper's range of hype, but almost nobody is.

I was recently at the Trop to watch a Rays game and sat out in right field and looked to see just how far it was for the ball to travel to that spot.

Yeah, metal bat or no metal bat, it's pretty damn impressive.

he has really awkward looking front leg movement on his swing. i'm guessing its a timing mechanism that he uses, but it looks wierd.

I just figured it gave him more torque in his backswing and is something he wouldn't typically use during a game.

His movement before the swing looks awful similar to Brad Hawpe. Looks like he has an awful "long" swing and against advanced pitching he should get picked apart with a swing like that.

He has enrolled in Juco now and will be taking his GED soon.

Keith Law did an article about it on ESPN as well:

Was wondering if there was a thread on him.

Needless to say, he's getting lots of talk in Pittsburgh, a good chunk of it surrounding on whether or not management would pay his rates.

It's going to be interesting to see how his season goes.

I think if Washington passes on him then you have to draft him and sign him.

How can you say that today? There have been so many Can't Miss Kids that have missed. In every sport.

depends on his bonus demands. if the dude wants $25M then pass. you can drop that amount on super-slot draft picks and international signings and get 15 good prospects, a few of whom should turn into good players.

Holy crap. Right now for the season .431/.528/.931 with 12 homers and a 21-22 K-BB ratio in 31 games in a wood bat league 2 years younger than most everyone else. Though the juco league he is in is considered bad.

Ben Goessling of MASN reports that the Nationals plan to select 17-year-old catcher Bryce Harper in this year's first-year player draft.

There has been some speculation that the Nats would look elsewhere, since a handful of scouts are down on Harper. But Goessling hears that the Nationals see the youngster as being "head and shoulders" above the rest of the upcoming draft's talent pool. Harper is batting .422/.516/.891 with 15 homers and 42 RBI through 39 games at the College of Southern Nevada.
