At least we wont have to worry about runing into Lowe in the playoffs.

i wouldn't say that so surely. atlanta is putting together a pretty good rotation. it shouldn't take a large amount of wins to take the nl wild card in 2009. i really hope we don't have to face him in the playoffs again either way though. and if we do, maybe the hitters will be prepared for the low and away pitches this time.

Atlanta's pitching staff should be fine. Their infield offense shouldn't be bad, but it might not be good enough to make up for the complete lack of offense they could get from their outfield.

Derek Lowe is already 35, I think the Braves made a poor move.

Also, I am inherently distrustful of Braves prospects. They're rarely as good as billed. Yeah I mean Andy Marte. Yeah I mean I doubt Saltalamacchia is going to be the Johnny Bench people mentioned. And while we're at it the only thing that doesn't outright suck about Jeff Francoeur is his arm.

The Braves are going nowhere. It's questionable if they can compete with the Marlins, let alone the Mets and Phillies.

well if it's good enough to get them to the playoffs, i like their odds from that point on.

Their pitching staff was dominant from 1991 until about 2004, and while they reached the playoffs annually, their pitching staff didn't exactly lead them to postseason success very often.

I agree with him to the extent that I don't trust prospects the Braves trade away. More times than not (and I believe a pretty wide margin) they don't amount to anything.

Horacio Ramirez, Andy Marte, Damian Moss, Ruben Quevedo, Joey Nation are all examples purely off the top of my head.

They've been excellent at identifying young talent and getting rid of the young non-talent at premium prices.

Excellent point. And I liked Pratt when he came over here.

I don't think he's talking about guys who were prospects over a decade ago. The only guy there that is really relevant to this conversation is McCann.

What premium price did they get for Joey Nation and Ruben Quevedo?

We gave them Jose Hernandez and Terry Mullholland.

I maintain Andy Marte will be a heckuva player. I remember when he was with Mississippi Braves and they were in town against the Montgomery Biscuits, I remember watching BP and everything he hit was a rocket. I mean everything literally exploded off his bat. I honestly believe Marte will be a late bloomer. If I was Baltimore, Seattle, San Diego I would try and buy low on him and let him everyday.

I was intrigued like most of Ryan Harvey's power potential, I was never "high" on Harvey. That and I never really saw Harvey play. I did with Marte, the young man obviously has talent, and I think if a team is needed a buy low/high reward type option for 3rd, then Marte could be your guy. The problem with Marte was that he went to organization that either didn't need him any time soon for 3rd (Atl with CJ) or to an organization that had no use for him (Boston) or an organization that has no idea how to use him (Cleveland), because of that Marte development as a player has been stunted. I'm not saying Marte will become a superstar, I just think he can become a really good player if a team just takes a chance on him. I know this board has talk about it, but like Felix Pie, Andy Marte needs to play to developed. Marte would be ideal player for Baltimore, especially to replace Melvin Mora.

Terry Mulholland actually put up a 151 ERA+ in 98 (the year before the trade). He and Jose Hernandez weren't exactly great players, but considering the best player the Cubs got back was Micah Bowie - and he never did a thing for the Cubs, his success came later - it was a decent return for the Braves.

Premium may have been the wrong word. More like good value for busts, I guess. Moss brought back a still decent Russ Ortiz, Marte netted Edgar Renteria, Ramirez brought in Rafael Soriano, etc.

Sounds awfully hazardous.

You know what I mean. Everytime the ball hit the bat, you stop and watch. So yeah, I still believe Marte will be a productive major leaguer, some team needs to give him a chance.
