Before people start puking and over dramatizing, Im not suggesting that The Cubs sign him, just that he could be an interesting option for some team looking for a power bat, especially of they could get him for a deal similar to what we gave Edmonds last year, especially since the Dodgers will be stuck paying him into sometime around the turn of the century thnks to their brilliant GM. Man, the Dodgers are becoming the Yankees, but stupid.

I think he only has one year left on his deal. I really think his career is over. I have no great argument for this, except I just dont see him as a player who will get himself into shape to play.

For some reason, I seem to recall Andruw signing a 2 year/36m contract last year. How would you like to have that contract coupled with Juan Pierre and Jason Schmidt. Ouch!

Playing for Aguilas Cibaenas, Jones is hitting .188 through five games with three singles and eight strikeouts in 16 at-bats. Jones has twice struck out three times in a game and has yet to collect more hits than strikeouts in the same game

That was on Dec. 23rd. I dunno how he's doing now.

If Andruw Jones actually gave a crap about his life, he could still be a good player, but it would seem he cares more about food rather than his health. If he actually exercised and got his weight back down to at the very least 240 it would probably make a world of difference with him. I haven't heard anything though about him that says he's been working on that though.

Even if he did, I'd still say no. He'd still probably demand too much money and not be worth it. I think that at best he could be a serviceable CF'er if he got his act together, instead of one of the top CF'er in the game like he used to be

I don't see a problem with taking a chance on him... just so long as it's at league minimum. His skillset might still be more useful than Joey Gathright.

Absolutely not. And can I just mention, what is this board's obsession with stopping to pick up every piece of crap lying in the street as long as if it's for league minimum? Okay, here's a rule of thumb: if you find yourself saying "He might be worth a look at league minimum," then 90% of the time that means, no, he's not worth a look at league minimum, he's not even worth discussing. Andruw Jones is garbage. He has no skillset. He's fat, his bat speed is s-l-o-w and he no longer has any pitch recognition whatsoever. He's like 275 pounds and he hacks at **** that even a one-eyed Soriano would know to lay off. Good God, a thousand times no.

This is a difficult disease to eradicate. For example, I hear in remote parts of Uzbekistan there are still people who think the old Morgan Ensberg and Richard Hidalgo are coming back. Morgan Ensberg is a particularly persistent myth, he's like Bigfoot. IT'S NOT REAL PEOPLE THAT VIDEO FOOTAGE IS JUST A GUY IN A BIGFOOT SUIT. WHOA HE JUST LOOKED AT THE CAMERA IT'S MORGAN ENSBERG I TELL YOU, I SWEAR TO YOU MORGAN ENSBERG IS OUT THERE SOMEWHERE IN THE WILDS OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY CALIFORNIA OCCASIONALLY KNOWN TO STRAY INTO NEIGHBORING TRINITY AND DEL NORTE COUNTIES BUT WE HAVE ESTABLISHED HIS HOME BASE FIRMLY AS EASTERN HUMBOLDT COUNTY.

Morgan Ensberg has a Tibetan brother they called "The Yeti."

Why does it seem like the NL West teams get free agent big money guys and they fall off the face of the earth?

Andruw Jones

Jason Schmidt

Juan Pierre

Aaron Rowand (not as bad)

Is this is more or less harsh than what the NSBB consensus said last year about Jim Edmonds.

So? Just because you catch lightning in a bottle once doesn't mean you start looking at crappy players and thinking about how you can do it again. Plus he said 90%, not 100&

You're right. There are no reclamation projects. Formerly good players never recover a bit of the magic for a season. And we certainly can't let them be replacing JOEY FREAKING GATHRIGHT as our 25th man.

Just out of sheer morbid curiosity... let's say the Indians come to you and say that they want to get rid of Travis Hafner. They'll pick up his whole contract and you don't have to give up anything even resembling a prospect. Do you let him take Micah Hoffpauir's spot on the bench?

Or, perhaps it's not "catching lightning in a bottle" when the scouts you pay to evaluate these situations say, "hey this guy looks like he's still got something left in the tank and we think he could help us."

Seems ridiculous to write that off as dumb luck if/when they turn out to be right.

Now if anyone feels that way about Jones is uncertain, but I surely wouldn't dismiss the possibility out of hand.

Per Buster Onley:

Jones is playing in winter ball, and scouts say that he has continued to struggle. There are many questions among talent evaluators about Jones's physical condition, and whether he will ever be in the kind of shape required for him to be a strong defensive outfielder again.

Jones has always had difficulty coping with breaking pitches low and away but never moreso than last season, when his strikeout problem became acute and greatly affected his confidence, some scouts believe.

For a guy who has seen his share of Dodger games in 2008, Andruw Jones is not someone you want on your team. Besides the obesity, the injury problems, the lack of plate discipline and the ridiculous contract, he did not help matters when he took the "I don't care" approach to his abysmal season. He was constantly seen laughing as he waltzed back to the dugout after a strike out, with an astounding chorus of boos from the fans.

I was happy to be wrong about Edmonds last year. I don't think I would be wrong about Andruw Jones. He's done.

I'm dissapointed that Jones' career has taken this turn. I enjoyed watching him play with the Braves and he was really good. It's too bad that he dropped off the end of the baseball playing earth.

He doesn't turn 32 until after the start of the season. He is certainly not "done" unless he decides that he doesn't want to put in the work to get back into shape and be something close to the player that he was. Players have had abysmal years and then come back to have good seasons again. McGwire's 1991, Greg Vaughn's 1997, heck Ruben Sierra fell off the face of the Earth and came back to have some productive seasons. I'm not saying the situations are exactly the same or even that it is likely, but there is certainly a possiblility that Jones could be a good player again.
