I dont get it. Why cant the bears just sign Holt/Harrison or some other solid vet to mentor the youngins for one or two years? Why cant they put solid players on their roster with proven experience?

Cheapass owners....

The Bears aren't cheap, at least on the defensive side of the football.

Well they had in the past few years. Fred Miller, Ruben Brown, Muhsin Muhammed. Those players all were kept longer than their "useful life" but helped for at least a year or two.

Not sure why they aren't now.

My unrealistic theory is that the Bears realize they aren't that close and since the economy is bad anyways they will lay low until the potentially uncapped year in 2010 and then make a big splash. Like I said unrealistic, but I can hope, right?

My pet theory is that they've pulled in the reins financially, but Angelo is doing his best to sign a cheap guy here, a mid-level guy there -- so that it doesn't look like they've pulled back.

Thats probably a more accurate one. I'll still hope for mine though.

John St. Clair has signed with the Browns.

it's a miracle. best move the bears have made all off-season.

Who is going to play RT? They have an unproven LT, an aging center, a young and average LG, and an old RG. Why did they have to lowball St. Clair? He played pretty good last year I thought.

Cody Balogh is the 1st team RT in minicamp this week. He was a practice squad guy last year. Frank Omiyale will probably be the starting RT when all is said and done.

Oh and St. Clair didn't "play pretty good". He gave up the 2nd most sacks in the NFL, for a team that didn't get sacked all that much. He was a decent run blocker though.

St. Clair might have been ok at RT or RG but he was clearly overmatched at LT against any speed rusher. Kyle Orton should be sending the Browns a fruit basket or something.

Thank God the human turnstile is gone. Omiyale will be the starting right tackle, and Im pretty positvie he will be better than St Clair.

Isnt Dan Buenning still with the Bears? I see no reason he cant step in at RG.

I think there's actually a decent chance we have better production at tackle this year.

At least now we're dealing with players that are younger, and have potential -- as opposed to aging vets & guys who are out of position.

Bears roster, OGs:

Dan Buenning

Tyler Reed

Josh Beekman

Roberto Garza

I'm assuming Lovie won't be able to give up on "one of his guys" -- Garza. That leaves Buenning and Beekman to fight it out for the other guard position, with Reed as depth. I really don't see a problem with that, though I kind of wish we could try Beekman and Buenning as starters, and keep Garza as veteran depth along with Reed.

The Browns do the Bears a favor. Nice.

As to the Marvin Harrison talk: Speaking as someone who sees every Colts game living here in Indy, I don't want any part of Harrison. He is done. He'd be an especially bad fit for the Bears, IMO.

Yup give me Torry Holt over Harrison every day of the week at this point.

I hope that our starting RT will come within the first two rounds.

Omilaye can compete with Garza and Beekman at G.

Williams-Omilaye-Kruetz-Beekman-Loadholt(?)

Garza, Buenning, and maybe one other on the bench.

Just wondering why youd want Omilaye at Guard and not tackle? He supposedly has an enormous wing span which Id think you would rather have at a tackle position so he can get his hands on an edge rusher even if he is beaten.

i'm not 100% convinced Holt is a good option, but he's by far preferable to Harrison and it's not close.

Even if they do draft a tackle early, I just don't see them starting Williams (essentially a rookie), and a fresh draft pick at the same time.

I'm thinking they put Omiyale in at RT regardless, until they can evaluate whoever they have drafted. Then they'll just hope Williams is up to the task.

Well it depends on what they draft. If they went with a Guard over a tackle, Omilaye obviously has the flexibility to do either.

So say we got Loadholt, Omilaye plays G. If we got Duke Robinson, Omilaye plays T.

And I see the issue of having two inexperienced players at tackle a non-issue. There is good line depth in this draft so even a second round pick is likely going to be ready. Yea there might be some amount of growing pains, but if they're the best player, you go with them. They'll only get better by playing in game situations.
