He was such a great DLine coach in Tampa. I mean, it wasn't like guys such as Simeon Rice and Warren Sapp were high regarded college prospects. What he did there was simply amazing.

you have no point. stop.

Then tell me his significant accomplishments in the NFL? Other being the DL line coach for a defense that will probably have 3 HOF's someday.

I'm saying it's [expletive] to hold it against a coach that he had good players.

3?

Sapp, yes

McFarlane ..?

Rice? I kind of doubt it. he had a few good years, and racked up a few sacks (122), but idk he gets in

idk, I do think Marnelli (sp?) would be better then f-in cross-eyed babich

Maybe he meant the whole Tampa defense? Sapp and Brooks are locks. I think Lynch will probably get in and maybe even Ronde Barber as well. I doubt Rice gets in as well.

Simeon Rice is a BIG fan of Marinelli: http://blog.mlive.com/highlightreel/2006/03/simeon_rices_3minute_rant_abou.html

I mean, this dude is straight-up one of the best minds of football that I've ever been around. I can go all day about it, but I'm trying to put it in a nutshell for you.

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1208/is_/ai_n15723521

Right end Simeon Rice, who has more sacks over the past 58 games than any player in the league, says Kiffin and Marinelli are "defensive geniuses in terms of what they do with concepts and theories and how they understand what type of athlete they need." Rice says Marinelli, a Vietnam vet who sprinkles in movie clips with game films, takes coaching to "an art form."

The fact that Marinelli coached great players means he's more likely to know what it takes to make a player great. Granted, those players were greatly talented before him, but he got to watch them every day on their paths to greatness. If he can get Mark Anderson (and hopefully a high DE draft pick) to learn the pass rush techniques that Simeon Rice used to be great. If he can get Tommie Harris back to Warren Sapp like production. Then he is a great hire. I'd rather hire him as DC personally, but the defense getting back to the top of the league is largely dependent on the DL. I think Marinelli has as much ability as anyone else out there to get the DL to a pretty good level.

Bears Free Agents

QB- Grossman

RB- K Jones

WR- B Lloyd

OL- St Clair

DB- M Brown

In last year of contract

WR- Booker

DE- Anderson

DL- Idonije

LS- Mannelly

DB- D Manning

DE- Ogunleye

QB- Orton

OL- Tait

LB- J Williams

RB- A Peterson

DL- Toeina

I think you waive Ogunleye, Tait, and Booker. I think you also let Grossman, Mike Brown, and Jones walk.

I'd probably re-sign JSC to compete at RT/RG and hopefully keep one of those positions warm for a young guy the Bears draft this year. JSC adds value as he could be an average RT or RG, and he is the backup LT with some experience there. I'd probably bring back Lloyd too. He shouldn't be too expensive, and showed flashes this year. He can be a good 3 or 4 if the Bears bring in a couple guys to go w/ Hester.

Definitely talk extension with Idonije and Manning, if only for their ST abilities.

Orton, Williams, Manning, and Anderson would all be playing for their next contract in the first half of 2009 (Jamar may have to worry about being cut late in camp).

Just curious, is there any one place that you've pulled some of this contract information from?

I'd really like to see some numbers attached, but so far, nothing I've found comes close that some NBA or MLB sites have.

Overall I'd agree with your assessment. I wouldn't be really quick to cut Tait or Ogunleye until I see what we do with free agency and the draft, and I'd at least talk with Mike Brown. I'd like to see a safety early in the draft, but Brown could still compete with Payne and be a good mentor (if he's willing to play that kind of role). He's the guy I'd most like to see retire a Bear, and then I'd give him a job offer right away. He's kind of like Wood with the Cubs, you just want to see him around.

DL coach Brick Haley is off to coach LSU's DL. Also:

Sun-Times[/url]"]The position might not be open long. Smith is expected to add former Detroit Lions coach Rod Marinelli to his staff. The two met Friday at Halas Hall and things could fall in place quickly.

Rotoworld has contract info. Search for a player and then click on 'Details' next to his contract information.

Thanks.

Looking at that, Ogun and Tait would cost us a little over $2M in cap space to cut. If we keep them on, it will cost us over $9M in cap space. Definitely cut them and put the $7M in cap room towards a big name FA. Peppers or Gross? The other position look at with a draft pick.

Yeah, I cut Ogun because I want an DE in the 1st round. You don't have to start the drafted DE, but he can come in and compete with Anderson, Idonije, and a cheaper DE picked up this offseason. To me, there's no reason to keep Tait. He can only play 1 position at this point (RT), and can't play that too well. He will only get worse with age.

I'd like Peppers, but it isn't the Bears M.O. to spend big on other teams' free agents, especially on defense. I'd spend the money on Gross or maybe even Antonio Bryant, but that's about it.

The Bears have spent pretty darn big on free agents like Mush and Tait. They also traded for Ogunleye when he was a holdout and they were willing to give him the money Miami would not. They don't generally go for best in breed, but they spend.

I think the reason you keep Tait is he's better than St. Clair at right tackle. JSC stinks. I don't care if he can play multiple positions, he's not good at them. I'd be fine with cutting Tait if they had a solid replacement, but I don't see that happening. And it's not like JSC is some young pup, he's only 2 years younger than Tait and will be 31 next season. He's been cut multiple times and the only team that has held onto him for a long time is the team that doesn't know crap about offensive players.

I would definitely cut Ogunleye though.

Haugh wants Warner at QB next year. I think he's nuts.

Warner did well playing with amazing receivers in a controlled climate against the worst division in football. He fell apart when playing at some tougher opponents. He's going to be 38 next season, and as has been often said this year, older QBs don't last in cold weather. Turnover prone older QBs tend to disappoint (Favre).

I think Warner would get killed with this offensive line and these receivers. Orton had no time, but he was a young, relatively smart QB who did a fairly decent job protecting the ball and moving around. Warner is a statue who would not have time to wait for guys to get open, let alone the pro bowl caliber receivers he's had at his disposal.

seems like the Mock Draft sites agree with the idea of a DE in the first round. Most that I've looked at have a DE there except for one who had Maclin

If I remember correctly, Warner wasn't all that great in his one yr stint with the Giants. So I agree, unless the Bears bring Fitz and Bolden with Warner and perhaps the Vikings or Eagles OL, then making Warner a priority is like giving Verne Troyer keys to a HumVee.

There's so many QBs who would get killed with this OLine & receivers though. It limits our options down to close to zero. Who can be great without great options and little protection? Probably just a handful of the most talented QBs in the league.

On offense, priority one: fix that damn line. Two: give me one WR to compliment Hester.

yeah, players heap praise on him and we thought he'd fix Kalimba Edwards, Cory Redding, Shaun Rogers, Shaun Cody

That's pretty much my point. While QB is the single most important position, offensive line is arguably the more important position group, as it's 5 players plus multiple backups. And no QB can thrive with a bad line. I think it's foolish to focus all of their attention on QB when the line is as shaky as it is. You've got a left tackle of the future who showed nothing this year despite being drafted because he was closest to ready (but not the one with highest ceiling). You've got very questionable guards, an aging center who hasn't played up to his reputation in 3-4 years and an about to become obsolete right tackle. There is very little youth on this line, and thus, very little hope of internal improvement. Any upgrades are going to have to come from outside the organization, via the draft or signings. I'd much rather keep improving that line and seeing what Orton can do, while developing Hanie and another draft pick, than sign a veteran to play with this same line and get killed.

We're on the same page. Orton's not going to be a superstud but I'd rather fix the supporting cast and then figure out QB afterwards.

On D we need more pass rush, I'd start looking for that DE first. We have other needs, but much of our defensive backfield woes can be mitigated with more pressure up front.

You can still work on the QB position in the meantime, just don't go spending free agent money on old statues. Matt Cassel did well in New England, not because he was some superstar in hiding, but because the rest of the offense was in place. He had a line, he had weapons.
