berroa/burke could replace cedeno, redding/hensley/james could replace marshall, wigginton could replace derosa the infielder, gomes could replace derosa the OF, taveras could replace pie, belisle/brazoban/proctor could replace hart.

told you all those guys could be replaced.

you're really using the word "replace" loosely

Burke would be interesting. I remember the Astros were going to put him at 2nd after Biggio retired, but later traded him.

But he can play outfield and infield, so that helps.

Plus he had that walkoff homerun in the 18th inning in the 2005 NLDS against the Braves, which means he's a great player.

whats the deal with cabrera?

2 plus pitches, no command, will collaspe easily. I love his arm.

That's the name that jumped out at me. Think he could find improved control pitching one inning at a time?

It's certainly possible, but some pitching coach on some rebuilding team has fallen in love with Cabrera's arm, and is convincing his GM to spending starter money on him.

help down the road...

Haeger

You must be looking way down the road. He's only 25, so we're looking at a good 7-8 years before he can start being productive.

I would definitely take a flyer on Saito. His numbers are outstanding, I know he has health questions but for ~ $4 mil, I'd take the chance.

Cards just non-tendered Tony LaRussa's lovechild, Aaron Miles. I'm sure they'll probably bring him back, though.

Yes a few of those guys could replace the guys we might have traded for Peavy. But most of them would have been downgrades, from the players we gave up. Plus signing Wigginton, Burke, Redding and Gomes or Taveras would cost another 10m plus(and Peavy 11m). If the Cubs had a 200m payroll next year, maybe theory could be right, but we don't. Losing that amount of players, and replacing them with crap players or minor leaguers would have hurt us ALOT more then you realize. I guess you don't remember the days of Jose Macias starting at 3rd, Rey Ordonez starting at SS, Troy O'Leary in RF or John Mabry at 1b when we had injuries.

Capuano for long-man/sport starter if they trade Marshall and dump Marquis.

He is coming off his second TJ surgery I don't know if I would want to get involved with that.

If that team was out there, then they would've traded a minor somethingorother to the O's so as to lock in an arb price and not to have to compete with the other 29 teams.

That's only true if you assume his arb price is lower than he'll get on the open market... which it might not be in this case.
