Interesting signings, wonder if it means anything:

The Padres are on the verge of putting together an entirely new middle infield.

The team is in serious discussions with free agent David Eckstein to play second base, according to major-league sources.

Meanwhile, San Diego general manager Kevin Towers told MLB.com that he is hoping to sign veteran shortstop Omar Vizquel by the end of this week.

Somebody posted on another board that Dave Kaplan said he'd rather have Michael Young than Peavy. he said something like "If I'm gonna go out and sign someone to a 60, 70...80 million dollar contract - gimme the guy who just played 156 games rather than a guy who missed 6 starts to injury."

Peavy watch: Hendry will meet with the new owner of the Cubs as soon Tribune Co. completes the sale. He'll then find out whether he can find a way to fit Jake Peavy's $63 million contract into the Cubs' budget. Otherwise, the Cubs will look for a veteran starter willing to sign a one-year deal. Left-hander Randy Wolf is among the available free agents whose price tags are dropping. For now, Sean Marshall is the odds-on favorite for the fifth starter's role.

From Chicagosports.com. More verification of what we suspected.

This is pobably a dumb question, but I don't really keep up with this stuff.

When they say "completes the sale", does that mean in the next week or 2 when the winning bid is chosen, or when the actual sale in final in April/whenever? I've been assuming that all this talk about "Hendry might pursue Peavy after the ownership situation is settled" means after they find out who the winner is, but a lot of the quotes make it sound like they're talking about when the sale is actually completed.

Interesting question, Bruce's article says "completes the sale" also. My guess is that once the winning bid is announced that Hendry will get approval from the soon to be owner. Earlier articles have stated that Peavy's contract this year is not the problem, but Hendry wants the approval for the years after that before proceeding.

I know this guy, who knows the owner of this business, who has an employee at this business that sometimes stops into this one shoe store to buy shoes, and the salesman at the shoe store knows the brother of the best friend of the guy who made that post on Cubs.com, and he confirms that the story is legit.

Can we officially move on to something else a bit more interesting now? Like Jake Peavy's shoe size or how often he mows his lawn?

My neighbor's boss's minister's wife's (not so) illicit lover's other girlfriend's ex-husband's shrink's investment banker's parole officer claims he spots Peavy mowing his lawn about every 10 days.

Well once a guy actually wins the bid, he still needs approval from MLB. But once the guy actually wins the bid, Hendry plans on having a meeting with him to talk about the payroll, and what he could do. From what I hear the problem is the 2010 season, and adding another 15m salary. With around 116m invested in Zambrano, Dempster, Lee, Ramirez, Bradley, Soriano, Lilly, Fukudome and Miles. Adding Peavy would put us at 130m plus for just for 10 players. So to get Peavy next year, Hendry is probably gonna need a committed payroll of 160-170m for 2010 to make it work.

So next year isn't a huge problem since they can probably fit Peavy in the budget after trading DeRosa/Marquis and probably dumping Wuertz or Vizcaino and Cedeno salaries. Even 2011 isn't a huge problem when you factor in Lee, Lilly, Miles and maybe Ramirez/Bradley salaries coming off the books. So if Hendry can't get the new owner to increase the 2010 payroll, he will probably offer a free agent pitcher a 1y deal at 5-8m. Which might get you Randy Wolf or Jon Garland, but Ben Sheets will probably want more then that. But maybe you can work out something with incentives, to get Sheets.

My girlfriend is an associate teacher at the school where both Tom and Todd Ricketts kids go to school. I met Todd at a holiday party the parents threw for the teachers, and ate some lasagna and chocolate cake with him in the school's cafeteria.

My girlfriend asked me not to mention anything about the Cubs (though I was DYING to), so instead I bombarded him with a continuous barrage of psychic messages saying "Sign Jake Peavy! Sign Jake Peavy!"

Don't worry, guys. This one's in the bag now. You can all thank me later.

You fool, by the time his contract is up and he's eligible to be signed, he'll be an old man. You should have told him to trade for him so we could get him 5 years earlier.

I knew someone was going to nail me on semantics. Actually it was "Get Jake Peavy" if that makes you feel better, but I didn't think that sounded as eloquent as I was typing it. I could have gone with "Trade the following group of prospects for Jake Peavy" and listed them, but I figured my juju was only strong enough for a simple three word phrase.

Joking aside, he seemed like a nice guy. I hope he and his brother make the winning bid, and hook their kid's teacher and her boyfriend up with tickets to the owner's box.

Team CEO Sandy Alderson reiterated Friday that Jake Peavy will likely be with the Padres on Opening Day.

"I've said before I think Jake will be with us on Opening Day, and I still believe that," Alderson said. "The bottom line is I think he is going to be with us to open the season."

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal is reporting the Cubs have reached agreement with the Orioles on a deal that will send center fielder Felix Pie to Baltimore for LHP Garrett Olson and Single-A RHP Henry Williamson

Could the wheels be a turnin? :ninja:

Between Marquis, DeRosa and this move it is all just too coincidental. Even if it doesn't happen I can't help but think that Hendry is taking a calculated risk and putting all the pieces in place so he can pull the trigger quickly once the sale is complete if he gets the necessary approvals.

Seems like it. I think he's banking on the new owner approving a trade that so obviously improves the team.

We sure do seem to be stocking up on young pitching, which the Pads seem to be looking for. My guess is that the reason Towers and the Pads keep saying that no trade is in the works is because no trade is currently in the works, but with all of these new random pitchers, Hendry may be prepping.

My big hope is that somehow Hendry can get Peavy without giving up Vitters.

Dont bet on it. Vitters would probably be the cornerstone of the deal.

It's a nice thought, but it's highly doubtful. We wouldn't have enough to give up without Vitters in the deal.
