We're not the first team to walk away from Towers and his demands in this.

Everyone knows what kind of situation the Pads are in. He has painted himself into a corner.

Just wait and see and stop acting like your life hinges on every tidbit we hear about it (this obviously is only directed at certain people).

Did you read Bruce's post and then paraphrased it? Sounds like you did, just a thought.

Actually, I didn't. But he's right on.

But i still feel that if we enter spring training without peavy then hendry failed on this deal period.

Without knowing all the details, it's ridiculous to assume that Hendry is the one that failed.

I'm not going to blame Hendry on this one. We all know the guy makes trades to improve the team. The bottom line is the Padres were asking for too much from us.

Prediction: Yankees sign Burnett (rumors are that they will outbid the Braves for him), Braves call up Towers and ask whats up.

And then Towers respond with Tommy Hanson, and then a click from the Braves side.

Peavy's worth about 3 wins over Marquis.

With the gaping hole in the outfield, there's a three-win improvement to be had that doesn't involve giving away a great prospect and committing yourself to a big four-year deal on a starting pitcher (rarely a good idea).

I'm not disappointed. Maybe we can stop hearing the repeated brilliant analysis of "It's jake peavy!" as if there's some MLB rule that says teams with guys named "Jake Peavy" advance straight to the NLCS.

If that were true, the Padres broke that rule a couple of times.

I was being dead serious! I'm so mad right now. Who cares if we dont know ALL the details. We know that Soto, Lee, Aramis, Soriano, and Marmol or any of our other SPs weren't in the deal. If that is the case, then everyone else should be fair game! Hendry is just trying to gain leverage, but it will backfire and Peavy will stay put or go to ATL, ANA, or NYY. Hendry is a moron. DeRosa?? Peavy is only 3 more wins than Marquis??? According to what? That stupid system?? I say hes 10 more wins, easily. He could easily go 20-3 for us. Marquis is probably not even a .500 pitcher. I hate this. I thought this was a "done deal?" But oh wait..... the Twins want to give us Boof Bonsor for DeRosa!!! So lets back out of getting Peavy cuz we want Boof!!! Or something stupid along those lines!! I'm so mad right now!!!! Hendry, you could have had the greatest rotation of ALL TIME!! Instead you wanted to hold on to DeRosa!

Honestly...

Starting pitching was PROBABLY the least of your worries.

Zambrano

Harden

Dempster

Lilly

Marquis

Marshall

That is pretty solid if you ask me, and yes I know a couple of them could go down to injury. And yes trading for Jake Peavy would of been amazing for you guys, but not trading away your entire system will probably end up being a good thing for the Cubs.

Yeah, the anguish over this is a little over the top, IMO. If it's July and we're playing well with Jake Peavy mowing down hitters in a Cubs uniform none of us will care that there were long, drawn-out negotiations back in November and December.

And if we're not where we want to be it probably isn't anything Jake Peavy would've fixed on his own. This should be the best team in the division by a somewhat substantial margin Peavy or no Peavy.

There's only one poster who seems to be in anguish.

His posts are kind of insane.

I could be wrong and I didn't follow it nearly as close as the Peavy talks, but last year when the Twins were working on trading Santana didn't they pull out, maybe a few times, and say they were just keeping him? Only to go on and trade him. I know that the situations are obviously a little different but I think something similar happened with Johan last year.

Its a shame if the deal is truly dead. If the reports were accurate regarding the players involved, it should have been a no brainer.

I understand that not getting Peavy isn't the end of the world, but we had him! We could have had him for nothing! Opportunities like this do not come up very often. He wanted to come to CHI, Towers needed to trade him. All they wanted was Vitters and DeRosa! It was that easy. Hendry screwed this up. And all the little reports about it being inevitable just make it worse. Because everyone in the world knew how easy of a deal this would be for the Cubs, and it was a no brainer, that is why everyone said it was inevitable, because no team in their right mind would turn this deal down.... oh wait, the cubs did!

Could have had him for nothing? I don't think so.

The biggest difference is that Peavy is signed long-term and is thus a burden for several years. Johan was gone after the season, anyway and at least garnered two picks if they lost him to FA. Pads are in a much worse leverage position with Peavy, IMO.
