Guys the deal's done. As we know, Jumbo Jim Hendry is from Florida. Instead of disrepecting Tim Tebow, Jim decided it was best to wait until after the winner of the Heisman -- nay -- Tim Tebow Award was announced, going to Tim Tebow of course. The deal will be announced early next week.

The Cubs are willing to trade Mark DeRosa to get a deal done for San Diego Padres right-hander Jake Peavy, but they appear unwilling to part with the pitching depth left-hander Sean Marshall provides -- even if it means they don't land the 2007 National League Cy Young winner.

Sources said the Padres considered the ball in Hendry's court in terms of making a potential three-team deal involving the Philadelphia Phillies happen. But the Cubs are operating without the same sense of urgency as the Padres, which seems to put the greater pressure on Towers.

That said, a Cubs source said there was still a feeling in the organization that a deal would get done. And Towers told San Diego media that he expected to know by today and that it might take a fourth team.

A source with the Phillies confirmed their interest in DeRosa, but he characterized the talks as slowing down. The source called the list of three Phillies minor-leaguers that ESPN reported were being considered in the trade ''erroneous.'' The report said two of the three would go to the Padres for DeRosa.

A Cubs source said the Minnesota Twins are also among several teams that have asked about DeRosa since they appeared to make him available, but the source added the Cubs would trade DeRosa only if he were part of a deal for Peavy.

Same stuff

LAS VEGAS – Trying to unload Jake Peavy has become such a chore for the San Diego Padres that they’ve established a self-imposed, curiously arbitrary deadline for a trade to the Chicago Cubs to be completed.

Tomorrow. As in Thursday, when baseball executives check out of their rooms at the Bellagio hotel and return home, another winter meetings a hectic, hazy memory.

“I told the Cubs, tomorrow is the day,” Padres general manager Kevin Towers said.

Towers has become impatient with the Cubs failure to unload starting pitcher Jason Marquis and his $9.875 million contract for 2009, the condition Chicago says must be met before they agree to the three- or four-team deal that would net them the Cy Young Award winner Peavy.

The Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies are believed to be the other teams in the deal. Names such as Felix Pie, Mark DeRosa, Garrett Olson and Kyle Kendrick have been tossed into the mix, although it is unclear precisely who would go where should the deal happen.

The Padres are willing to take Marquis, but only if the Cubs eat most of the salary. That sort of defeats the purpose for Chicago general manager Jim Hendry, who wants to trim payroll in order to absorb the $56.5 million owed Peavy the next four years and, oh by the way, have enough money to sign a left-handed hitting outfielder. Free agent Raul Ibanez would do nicely.

Should the Cubs be unable to find a landing spot for Marquis on Thursday, Towers can either go back to the Atlanta Braves, who couldn’t come up with a satisfactory package for Peavy a few weeks ago, or go back to Peavy’s agent, Barry Axelrod, and see if the pitcher will expand the short list of teams to whom he’s willing to be traded.

Or Towers could extend the deadline. It’s his deadline, after all. And not his first. At the general manager meetings a month ago, he proclaimed that Peavy would be traded before the date free agents would be eligible to negotiate with any team. The date came and went, and Peavy was still on the market.

This thread has been quiet................ too quiet........

Where was our graveyard shift to tell me every new detail when I woke up?

On the bright side, there were plenty of bad jokes to read.

Part of me just thinks that Towers likes making all us fanboys do :banghead: ](*,) You all realize that him and Jimbo are downing shooters laughing at us right now, right?

It seems like the framework is in place. We're bitching about Jason Marquis and a couple million. DeRosa is a goner but damn if it isn't selling high. Carrot Top, err, I mean Peter Angelos is nowhere to be seen and Jake Peavy will probably be a Cub.

Smile!

Agreed on Figgins. He's what you would get if you crossed Juan Pierre's scrappiness and suckiness with Mark DeRosa's versatility.

I'm starting to doubt this will get done and i've lost a lot of respect for some writers depending on who gets the story right because it seems like chicago writers are saying it will get done but national media like ESPN keep saying its unlikely or too many hurdles, etc. I think to today we'll hear significant news, we might even see a breaking news report saying the trade went down. Once the Rule V is over, we'll know something. I dont think we'll get important news until 7pm or so.
