That's a ton to give up for Peavy, but I'd still love it.

Do you really think Happ is worth Marquis (a ML starter) and DeRosa (a very good player)

marquis has negative value and i wouldn't classify derosa as a "very good" player. not unless he duplicates his 2008...which won't happen

all things considered, dero in 2008 was fantastic, in 2007 and 2006 he was merely very good...350 wOBA at second base and paying about $1M per win over replacement, thats freakin great

i don't think an .800 ops guy can ever be considered "very good" unless he's a gold glove shortstop or catcher and/or steals bases like jacoby ellsbury

or hes merely an adequate middle infielder or catcher

Would you consider Dustin Pedroia to be "very good"? Because his OPS was .869 last year. DeRosa's was .857.

Obviously, Pedroia's much more valuable, but DeRosa was very good for a second baseman last year.

then again, trading derosa would make milton bradley look less attractive.

Good point. We would be back to Fukudome in RF. We will need to sign Edmonds again.

It also makes it less likely that Pie is in the deal. Bradley, Fukudome, Johnson, and Pie for 2 OF spots would be fine.

Tangentially, I'm really bad at making comparisons based in runs. Can someone give me a triple slash line that's approximately 10 runs worse than .290/.375/.480? 20 runs? 30 runs?

so an average 2B with an .800 ops is a "very good" player now?

He's not?

to me "very good" means you're in the upper echelon of players. if an .800 OPS 2B is "very good", then what does that make a .725 OPS 2B? good?

Whoa. I've missed a lot. Can anyone break down what the rumored deal is?

Phillies may be the third team.

Marquis' name has been thrown around in order to get salary relief.

DeRosa might be traded in the deal.

Michael Wuertz is another name out there.

Angels are still in the running for Peavy.

We lose almost all of our depth if we trade Derosa. Who backs up Aramis then with any decent level of production? Rich Aurillia?

If the Orioles are an extra team in the Jake Peavy trade, that's news to them.

From what I've been told, they haven't agreed to any deal that would allow the Padres to send pitcher Jake Peavy to the Cubs. The Orioles are rumored to be involved, along with the Phillies, with the assumption that left-hander Garrett Olson goes to the Cubs for outfielder Felix Pie.

The Olson/Pie talks are real. However, the Orioles got dragged into the Peavy rumor after Padres general manager Kevin Towers indicated that a trade was completed with the Cubs, as long as they agreed to absorb the right-hander's contract. Towers was waiting to hear back from Chicago general manager Jim Hendry.

For that deal to work, the Orioles seemingly have to part with Olson, who would be flipped to the Padres. But a team official said if the Padres announce a trade early tomorrow, the Orioles aren't involved in it.

Do you think Hendry is the one waiting to pull the trigger?

No Peavy deal will be completed until the Cubs' new owner is decided, sources say. The new owner would need to approve the addition of Peavy, who is owed $63 million.

Argh!

Again, that was posted earlier. It was BS then also. Even Bruce came to NSBB and posted about it.

Well thats pretty much exactly what Towers said
