How come everyone thinks that the Phillies entering means they would be the 3rd team in a 3 way with the cubs and pads? It seems like they are entering to get Peavy themselves. Even in Rosenthal's blog, under Peavy's pic it says something like "cubs and phillies both started talks with the padres about jake peavy." Phillies being the 3rd team involved in the discussions can easily just mean that the phillies are the only other team towers is talking to about peavy. 1) sd 2) chi 3) phi. Or it could mean that they are the 3rd team to be interested in peavy. 1) cubs 2) LAD 3) PHI. Cuz earlier today there was something about the Dodgers being the only other team peavy would want to go to. Maybe now the Phillies appeared on that list since they just won the WS.

It's already been explained that Fraley misquoted Rosenthal.

How do you know? What if WE are misinterpreting Rosenthal. To me it sounds like they are entering as the 3rd team involved in the race for Peavy. Rosenthal himself put a quote under the Peavy pic saying "The Cubs and Phils have both started talks with the Pads about Jake Peavy." I don't see the Phillies going up to the Pads and saying "Oh you guys want to trade Peavy?? We'll give you some of our awesome young pitchers if you guys could get us Ronny Cedeno... we want him really bad!" They have 1 starting pitcher on their team, 1 wife beater, 1 chubasaur and 2 scrubs. They NEED pitching.

8:01pm: Scott Miller of CBSSports.com says Jason Marquis and Angel Guzman (among others) could end up with the Padres in the three-team deal. The Padres could get J.A. Happ and/or Chris Coste from the Phils. Miller adds that the Phils are known to have interest in Mark DeRosa.

Angel Guzman could easily be the player whose injury history Jim Hendry was upfront about.

His history, perhaps not. However, if it turns out that he has some sort of non-publicly disclosed medical condition involving his shoulder or arm that has been the root cause of his injuries, rather than a series of unfortunate events, the Padres would definitely want to know that information.

I dont know about moving DeRosa. The main focus of the off season was supposed to be offense. Pitching wasnt even really on the radar until Paevy entered the picture. If we do end up moving DeRosa in such a deal, I hope theres a real possibility that we can get someone like Bradley or Abreu as well.

How could we be misinterpreting what he said?

and also have emerged as a possible third team in the ongoing discussions between the Cubs and Padres regarding right-hander Jake Peavy.

I think it's pretty obvious what he's saying. He didn't say "possible third team in the Peavy derby" or anything like that, he said "third team i discussions between the Cubs and Padres"... meaning those 3 teams are having the talks.

They just said the phillies are in fact interested (on philly sports talk radio), not as a 3rd team. makes perfect sense. they are a contender but need starting pitching far more than we do

One issue, the phillies minor leagues are pretty barren due to a series of recent trades that pretty much gutted them. They do have some tradeable assets on the big league team, though (Victorino frinstance...)

I don't have a problem with moving DeRosa. His value is at an all-time high, and we have a very similar player making the league minimum available... one who also fits management's obsession with left handed hitting. If DeRosa is the piece that puts the deal over the top, you pull the trigger without hesitation.

Soriano

Fontenot

Lee

Ramirez

Bradley

Soto

Fukudome

Theriot

Peavy / Zambrano / Harden / Dempster / Lilly

I'm ok with that.

I don't understand why the Phillies would want to help the Cubs get Jake Peavy. I mean, they are kind of defending Champions. The Cubs getting Peavy with their help doesn't look good...does it?

I myself don't believe that they are involved though, so whatever.

The main focus of the offseason wasn't really about offense.... it was about left handed offense. Maybe they want to give the left handed Fontenot a full time shot and free up payroll at the same time. If that's what it would take to get Peavy and also that RF that hendry/Lou are obsessed with, I'd do it. I'm curious about Fontenot

Sounds better to me. Im thinking weve seen the last of Lee at the 3 spot. And by thinking, I mean hoping. Also, this also hinges on actually getting Bradley.

Remember, Lou has made it clear to the world that a bat is his top priority, and while its not in his hands, Im sure he has a lot of say in the matter. I dont think hed take too kindly to moing one of his better and more consitant offensive players, even if it is for one of the best ptichers in the game unless he gets another bat as well.

I live in Philly and listen to sports talk radio frequently. I would bet a lot they read that thing on foxsports and are talking about it. I wouldn't trust anything on sports talk radio in general.

I wouldn't be opposed to trading Derosa, if we could deal Derosa and Marquis in a Peavy deal that would clear up over $10 mil. in payroll and maybe on top of adding Peavy and 1 of Bradley, Ibanez, Abreu or Dunn we could sign Furcal and move Theriot to 2B with Fontenot or we could sign Orlando Hudson.

regardless, the rest makes sense, yes?

Does it make sense that Philly wants Peavy? Sure, everyone should want Peavy. However, does Peavy want Philly? They were not on his list, and it is an awful ballpark to pitch in.

Rosenthal and Scott Miller have reported Philly as a 3rd team. The only "report" of Peavy to Philly incorrectly identified Rosenthal as havig reported that (which he did not). I wouldn't worry about it, until there is a legitimate source.

The Phills were not even in the original 5 that Peavy gave permission, right?

Braves

Astros

Cards

Dodgers

Cubs

Also, didn't he say he didn't want to play for a team in NE?

Roesnthal has been all over the place on this to be considered more than just another guy who is reaching for any information and sports radio is just a bunch of balding, bad bearded egos pretending to be experts on everything.

Again, Rosenthal didn't say the Phils were interested in Peavy. The guy misinterpreted what Rosenthal said

If the Phillies had a rotation including Cole Hamels and Jake Peavy, I'd quit everything there is to quit.

Just sayin'.

With so much being unknown about when Utley will return having Derosa would be a huge help to them to start the season, so from that standpoint it makes sense.
