Don't know if it's been posted yet because I'm too lazy to read this entire thread. But this mornings Sun Times said "Sources say Cubs GM Jim Hendry is very close to trading for the Padres' Jake Peavy"

It says it would likely be a 5-1 deal with us sending Pie, Marshall, Vitters, Cedeno, and Hart. That's pretty similar to what the post above me says, it looks like. The article also said though that it's possible for the Cubs to trade Pie to Baltimore for Garret Olson who would then be flipped to SD.

This is getting fun.

I'm not I understand the hold up. Couldn't we just send Pie to San Diego in the deal, then San Diego can send Pie to Baltimore for Olson?

Hendry has already told Towers to be cautious about a particular Cubs'prospect because of medical issues that might not otherwise have come to light. In a business where such information is precious and is often considered proprietary, establishing trust and cultivating candor are critical to getting deals done.

Nice quotes there.

Vitters and his hand/wrist?

And I don't buy the "we have to wait to get approval from ownership" BS. If Kenney has already said and implied how high the payroll is going to be, they obviously know the amount. I don't see why they need approval from anyone if they already have gotten approval on the overall budget.

I'm no business/financial expert, but there may be some issue regarding the money that would be owed to Peavy in future years - it may be viewed as a "liability" and somehow affect the current value of the ballclub and, in turn, the sale.

Others may be able to discuss this further.

I know this isnt the right thread, but has Greene actually been traded yet by the Padres?

Yeah. That deal is done (except for the PTBNL)

I'm guessing there might be something wrong with Veal.

Guess I should have specified the Cardinals.

LOL, that's what I was hoping Hendry would try to pull but that was minor...it's definitely not Josh.

Does ridiculously poor command qualify as a "medical issue"?

Sometimes. There has to be some explanation for why he was left off the 40 man roster.

When does Levine usually start his updates on ESPN1000? Did Mr. Miles say he would log in to NSBB and give us any updates?

I would imagine Mr. Miles will take care of his loyal reader base first.

Las Vegas is on Pacific Coast Time, and because "Sin City" is known as the city that never sleeps, I wouldn't get too excited in anticipation of early morning trade talk.

Seems like more rehashing from Rogers..

… Don't be surprised if the Cubs finish the Peavy trade in Las Vegas. Padres GM Kevin Towers has to be getting tired of talking about this one.
Look for the Mets to leave Vegas with a closer signed, which will allow them to turn their attention to improving their starting pitching.

They reportedly have an interest in Jon Garland. The Cubs have offered Jason Marquis, a trade that would make it easier for them to complete the long-rumored Jake Peavy trade.

Jake Peavy Rumors: Monday

By Tim Dierkes [December 8 at 11:44am CST]

11:44am: Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald says the Cubs and Padres did not talk about Peavy on Sunday but will today. He's heard the Padres might be concerned with Vitters' hand/wrist.

It is Vitters wrist.

SOB. Why did Hendry disclose that? I would think he would only disclose it if it was going to be a major issue, which means our top prospect and best trade chip is tarnished.

I'm sure other teams knew about it too already (considering he missed a month or two I believe), but i'm still not convinced it's enough to holdup anything. Bruce didn't make it sound like a big deal in his article, and went on to say that it just may mean that the third team is needed or that we have to tweak something. Which would be friggin sweet if we didn't have to give up Josh.

Here was the exact quote from Bruce's link:

Whispers out west indicate the Padres might be concerned about the hand/wrist of top Cubs prospect Josh Vitters, a third baseman. The hand has bothered him off and on. In other words, the Cubs may have to offer more in the way of prospects or get that third team involved in any deal for Peavy. Cubs GM Jim Hendry is pretty good at getting his guy once he focuses on him. I wouldn't bet (bad choice of words here in Vegas) against him, but it may take awhile.

Like I said, at least Bruce doesn't sound like it's some major hangup.
