Am I the only one who'd rather have Dunn than Peavy or just about anyone else being mentioned?

you'd rather have a low .800's OPS RF with terrible defense (abreu, ibanez) than jake peavy?

He didn't say that.

Low .800's? Don't you mean low .900's?

And when you think about it, Dunn could be considered a bigger need. Sure we all want Peavy over Dunn, but if we don't get Peavy our rotation is still one of the best in the NL, but our RF situation is still in shambles. Getting Dunn would solve that, so we'd still have a top notch rotation, and a slugging RF'er to fill our glaring need

Edit: oh, you're talking about Abreu and Ibanez. Why?

Quick question. Do the meetings actually start tonight, or tomorrow?

Officially tommorrow but they are all down there already so i'm sure they are talking today.

I've been mulling over a list of GMs I'd want to be playing poker against, considering this is down in Vegas. Everyone is welcome to add to it as they see fit:

Kevin Towers

Brian Sabean

Jim Hendry

Andy MacPhail (only if Peter Angelos is standing over his shoulder)

Jim Bowden

Any others come to mind?

Why not have both?

I don't know if the numbers would work, unless they traded Harden too. Which wouldn't be the end of the world if they got Peavy. Seriously, though, would Dunn be any worse in RF than Ibanez or Abreu or Bradley? He should be the #1 target, IMO.

Anyone else remember last year during the meetings when we had some brief discussions about getting Josh Hamilton for Sean Marshall but the Reds really wanted Hill?

Cafardo likes the Angels and Brewers as dark horses for Jake Peavy

Hmm...now the Brewers thats an interesting place I hadn't thought of yet. Jake didn't say he'd want to play for Milwaukee, but its not all that far from Chicago, and they would definitely be competitive if he came aboard. From the Brewers perspective its a perfect match. They get a Sabathia level pitcher for a much more affordable contract.

I have to think that if Towers has spent a month exhausting all possibilities to get the proper value from our crappy farm system for Peavy, including trying to find a third team, that there really isn't another option. The circumstances of the situation lead me to believe Peavy is essentially forcing Chicago as his only possible destination.

Kind of what I am thinking. I am not really sure Peavy wants to go back to SD after all of this and knowing the state of the franchise for the next 2-4 years. I don't think the Brewers have a shot, but the Angels were always the team I thought could make a play.

Angels could still make a deal for Peavy

The Los Angeles Angels figure to be major players in Las Vegas. If Mark Teixeira signs elsewhere, they could consider free agent outfielders Manny Ramírez, Adam Dunn, or Pat Burrell.

Don't discount them as a player for Jake Peavy, with the chips — young shortstop Brandon Wood, righty Ervin Santana — to give to San Diego, according to the Boston Globe.

They'd love to use Chone Figgins as their Tony Phillips, playing various positions, so Colorado third baseman Garrett Atkins could be on the radar. Catcher Jeff Mathis is trade bait.

More on the Angels.

I'm not concerned at all about Peavy goin to the Brewers. Yes the city is close to Chicago, but there's a big difference between the cities and playing for the Cubs. So I find it really unlikely that Peavy would consider waving his no-trade to come to the Brewers. These latest rumors basically sound like the writer trying to find good fits for Peavy, without any actual fact or inside information. If Peavy was really willing to go to the Brewers we would have heard them in trade talks before today. A trade to the Angels is somewhat possible, but probably unlikely for two reasons. The Angels have been unwilling to trade top prospects or young talent in the past, and I can see them doing the same thing with Peavy. Plus who's If Peavy would even be willing to play in the AL.

Less "the deal is on life support"/"don't count out the Angels/Brewers/Mets/Yankees/Royals" links, more "the Cubs and Padres are expected to choose a third team and finalize the deal this week" please.

LAS VEGAS -- The Cubs' chances of acquiring former Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres appeared to improve Sunday after both teams arrived at the Bellagio Hotel on the eve of the winter meetings.

But Cubs officials stress they're a long way from consummating a deal and have at least two significant steps to take before entering the final stages of Peavy talks -- namely acquiring their top priority of a left-handed bat and clearing payroll by trading the bulk of pitcher Jason Marquis' remaining $9.875 million contract.

While that points to the likelihood the Cubs will leave Las Vegas on Thursday without Peavy, multiple sources with knowledge of the Cubs' talks with the Padres told the Sun-Times over the weekend they expect the deal to get done.

Reports out of San Diego that the framework of a five-for-one deal is in place are exaggerated, a source close to the Cubs' dealings said.

But such a deal has been discussed, sources say, including the third-team involvement of the Baltimore Orioles, who are said to be willing to trade left-handed pitcher Garrett Olson for Cubs outfielder Felix Pie, allowing the Cubs to include Olson in a pitching-heavy deal for Peavy.

One well-placed Cubs source -- who earlier in the day told SI.com he thought a deal for Peavy was ''on life support'' -- said he was encouraged by events Sunday.

As the winter meetings opened informally tonight in Las Vegas, the Padres and Cubs still have a 5-for-1 framework in place to send Jake Peavy to the Cubs.

But there doesn't appear to be a rush to get anything done. For one, the Cubs are being sold, a deal that still needs time to go through. The teams also may want to wait until after the Rule 5 draft. The Padres will draft third and likely will add a player onto their 40-man roster, so they may need to move some things around before adding three or four players from a Peavy swap.

LAS VEGAS -- The Jake Peavy-to-the-Cubs talk is back on again.

While the trade discussion was characterized in this space several hours ago as being "not dead, but on life support," the condition of the talks has clearly been upgraded by tonight.

If the Cubs do land Peavy, they've come from a long way back to get him.

Man this sucks, NSBB was down like all day. I figured maybe it exploded after the Peavy deal was finalized, but it was still pending a physical so none of the major news sources were reporting it.

Now it comes back up and all I see is some BS about the deal being on life support, followed by how its back on now.

Stupid Brian Roberts thread Jr.
