Jake Peavy could be a little closer to being traded and the Chicago Cubs could be a little closer to getting him.

San Diego Padres general manager Kevin Towers said Wednesday night he might have identified a third team that would facilitate sending the standout pitcher to the Cubs, who don’t possess the depth in prospects or big league-ready talent to meet the Padres’ asking price.

Towers, who last week hit an impasse in negotiations with the Atlanta Braves, declined to name the third team. He said he intended to speak again to Cubs GM Jim Hendry after the Thanksgiving holiday.

I think Towers just blinked. He might be more desperate than he has shown so far. That owners divorce must really be wreaking havoc with his decision-making.

But..but..Lou said we didn't need any more starting pitching. That means that the Cubs will no longer pursue Peavy! The ESPN bottom line cannot be wrong!

And what's this "after the Thanksgiving holiday" thing? It's basically over at 1 o'clock and even the football games suck this year. Make it happen tonight Jim!

We dont need a short stop, but if Hanley Ramiez were to fall into our lap, would Lou say no? Im just saying, when you have a shot at one of the top 5 starters in the game, you can make an exception. I know that his top priority is a LH bat, but theres really none out there that anyones absoltely in love with.

Comical, comical stuff.

Towers himself identified the third team.

Towers: "Jim, if you can figure out a way to get me (insert name of uberprospect) from (insert name of mystery team), you can have Peavy."

Hendry (to himself): "I wonder if I can get (insert name of uberprospect) for miscellaneous flotsam and jetsam."

Does it ever get tiring ragging on the Cubs and Hendry? I'd be exhausted if I were you.

As opposed to.....?

Of course he's the one who has to find a team, he's going to be receiving their players.

That was my whole point, ESPN reported the cubs would no longer pursue Peavy because Lou said "We're set at SP. We don't need any more". Well, of course they don't need anymore, but it sure would be nice to have Peavy. I didn't read anything into Lou's comments because I think he was just saying what he was supposed to say: we're a good team and I'm happy with my players.

I still have my doubts that the Cubs will land Peavy, but people read into Lou's comments way too much.

Im just curious as to who the mystery team is. Im assuming its a perenial non contender.

Marlins: they're always open to moving any player for the right prospect package

Royals: could Greinke, and maybe Teahen be involved somehow?

Rays: they have young talent to spare

Seattle: they need help any way they can get it.

Minnesotta: they're trying to re stock. Delmon Young would likely be involved.

Toronto? Baltimore? Washington?

Then again, it could be a last ditch attempt to pry Tommy Hanson away from the Braves.

Everything I read sounds like the Padres want young pitching.

Possibly the Marlins. It won't be the Royals because Greinke is unavailable and if he was he would cost (in players) almost as much as Peavy. I'm not sure what we could offer the Rays for young pitching. Minnesota's young pitching would cost too much (in players).

I offered a trade suggestion at OH:

Marquis + Vitters + Wells for Scott and 2 of Mikolo/Olsen/Tillman/Arrieta. Cubs flip the 2 young pitchers with Pie, Marshall, and Hart for Peavy. Cubs end up with Scott and Peavy. Possibly we could get Cedeno (to Padres) and Greene (to the O's) involved.

I think they should trade Harden

If the cubs want to also get Hermida along with Peavy it's probably the only way it can be done. Unless the Marlins really value Ty Colvin

The only people who want Jeremy Hermida are on this board.

More likely, The Cubs are sending Marquis as part of the deal and Towers found a team that will give him some very young arms for him. That team may very well be the O's though not for any of the players mentioned.

If Towers got Pie, Marshall, Hart, Marquis and Vitters for Peavy and then flipped Marquis to someone for 2 players that were currently in Low A that would be a respectable deal, particularly since he has only one bidder and must make the deal.

From what I've read, the Padres want young ML-ready pitching, so they wouldn't want Low A ball pitchers and I doubt they want the hassle of trading Marquis.

Why the heck would the orioles do that?!?

I'm not sure the O's will do that, but I do know that they drool over Vitters, that they have a ton of young pitching, and they can use a veteran innings-eater like Marquis. Scott has no long-term future with the O's. The O's might really get involved if we added Cedeno (to the Padres) and Greene (to the O's) because they need a SS bad.
