According to MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince, the Indians appear closer to a two-year deal with Kerry Wood. The deal may contain a third-year option.

I won't mind rooting for Wood on the Indians.

At least it's an AL team. :(

One that routinely plays against the White Sox.

And one that comes to Wrigley Field from June 19-21.

I usually find it lame when guys come back here to St. Louis and the fans shower praise on them, i.e. Edmonds and Taguchi. But I think Woody deserves some recognition from the fans when he comes back for his time here. Thing is, if he comes in to try to close a game it would be weird to have the fans cheering him.

meh...i will cheer him on...root for him to succeed...and won't be upset if he does

it's kid k baby!

My ideal situation would be for Wood to enter the game to a nice, robust, well-deserved standing ovation, followed 15 minutes later by the Cubs players on the field high-fiving each other and the crowd joyously singing Go Cubs Go after a come-from-behind win.

i'll give him a standing O when he comes out, hope we rock his world, then go back to loving him again after the game.

I am glad he signed w/ another team I like - the Indians, Twins, and Rays are all teams I root for mainly b/c of my dislike for the that other Chicago team, the Yanks, and Red Sox.

Our local paper today says the Indians are discussing internally the results of Woods' physical and that the contract is not finalized yet. anyone else heard anything like this?

Yes, but just today they finalized the deal and made it official.

The way that is phrased leads me to believe that if Kerry can stay healthy in either 2009 or 2010, he's looking at a 3/31.5 deal (which is what Jim Hendry said he should get, iirc)

"Not only did he hold up for the season, but he was able to pitch three days in a row multiple times," Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said. "He was dominant as he as ever been in his career."

After pitching in 22 games as a setup man in 2007, Wood went to spring training and won the closer's job -- vacated when the Cubs made Ryan Dempster a starter -- over Carlos Marmol and Bob Howry. He went 5-4 with a 3.26 ERA and made the All-Star team.

But he fell out of Chicago's plans this winter, when the Cubs acquired reliever Kevin Gregg from Florida as a setup man and moved Marmol to closer. Wood has no resentment toward the team that gave him his pro start by drafting the 6-foot-5 Texan in 1995.

"I understand it," Wood said. "That's part of the game and it's time to move on."

Moving into the closer's role seemed to suit the hard-throwing Wood, who can still pump his fastball into the mid-90s. He now has a nasty curve to go with it. He said the adjustment to closing took him only three weeks, a transition made easier because of his background as a power pitcher.

1. Wood missed about three weeks of the season, so he didn't exactly hold up.

2. Wood has always had a nasty hook.

Didn't he just have a blister though? That's a bit different than arm problems.

Sure, but does it really matter what the reason is that your closer is on the bench? Either way, he didn't hold up.

I wish Kerry all the very best! I still get a little melancholy thinking about his 20 strikeout game and what everyone hoped would be a Nolan Ryanesque career for him in Chicago.

What could have been, what should have been, etc...

His leaving Chicago closed the door on another Cubs "era" that has passed for me. I hope he takes Cleveland to the WS - hope we beat them there, but that goes without saying.

Good luck Kerry.

But his arm held up, and that's the bigger picture. A blister is basically a completely random occurrence.

It's not a completely random occurrence since he's had blister problems in years past (I remember he had one at the start of 2004, although I don't think he missed time with it), but I agree. You'd never prefer someone get injured and miss time, but if someone with Woody's injury history goes on the DL, a blister being the culprit rather than something structural with his shoulder or elbow probably comes as a relief.

I'm torn. :(

I like Kerry, and I know we needed a closer, but that's a lot of money for the Indians to pay. Oh well, it should be an interesting year.

if he stays healthy, you'll love the deal... just because he's so fun to watch pitch
