I don't know if anyone has mentioned him yet (I haven't seen it but I don't look at every thread that comes up) but if we can't resign Wood or even if we do I would like us to sign Juan Cruz.

His last two years he had a 3.10 and 2.61 ERA. In 122 2/3 innings he has struck out 158. That's a K-rate of 11.59 and this past year was 12.37 (second highest among pitchers with 40+ innings and higher than Marmol). We can sign him and if we want to keep Marmol in the when we need him emergency/setup man role try Cruz at closer or if we move him to closer make Cruz the setup man.

The reason I think he would be a good option regardless of if we resign Wood is that as good as he's been he's not getting a whole lot of attention so I think we could get a great RP for cheaper than his true value. I would guess (don't really know because no one has covered it) but Cruz could probably be had for 4 years and 24 million or so. This is true especially with K-Rod and the other huge free agents that teams will be concentrating on and spending all their money on.

I'd be all for signing Juan Cruz also, but not for four years and not for $24M.

The Type A status plus the money he'll get really takes away from his vaule. Rafael Soranio might be had cheap coming off some health issues last year he returned to pitch well.

I'd like to see Hendry explore this one...

yeah forgot about that ... that lowers the amount I would want offered to say four years 16 million.

What percentage of first rounds picks are actually "productive" major league players? If it's not very high, then who cares about losing the first round pick, especially if the guy you are signing is already a "productive" major league player?

High enough to where you often look for similar players without having to give up a 1st rd. pick. I would be extremely disappointed if the Cubs were unable to bring back Wood and give up a 1st rd. pick for someone who will likely be less productive than Wood.

On the flip side, what percentage of superstars come out of the first round as compared to any other round?

I don't like the idea of giving up our first round pick for a reliever. For someone like Dunn, sure, but a middle reliever or a setup man, no.

That was one of the reasons the Latroy Hawkins signing was such a bad idea.

When comparing the two options of re-signing Wood, or signing Juan Cruz, there is no difference in draft picks, aside from movement a couple picks in either direction

Most likely we would get a better pick than we would give up, unless the Angels signed Wood. I don't think many of the protected teams would go for him. The Rangers would be the most likely.
